With my tail between my legs, I'm back

Thanks to all of the well-wishers (I re-read my post and then all of the subsequent responses). I'm back to where I need to be - square one - with a bit more humility and a bit more constitution.

Like every other tragedy that hits my family, I've had my time to be angry and now accept it and likewise come to realize (yet again) that alcohol does not change the situation and imbibing certainly is not a good reaction on my part.
