How Much Money Could You Save?

I figured around $1,290 a year was spent on Scotch...

Not including money spent on chaser...

Wow, good post. I just did the math...

Whiskey: $650
Beer: $520
Bars: $1,200
Beer on golf course: $450
-------------------------
Total: $2,820 (plus tip LOL)

That's a boat load of money. Comes up to $257 per month. I've never put it in this kind of perspective. Thanks for the post!

Wow... The only reason my number is lower is I am a cheap *******. I never went to bars (willingly). I always drank at home, where it was "safe."

I was always "proud" that I was still drinking single malt scotch when I quit, (some time ago now), but when I stopped suffice it to say that with the money I no longer spent on a habit that required at least a fifth or more per day, I bought a condo.

True story.

$500 a week easy. Much more if you add the rediculous things I spent money on because I was drunk. Ive been sober 6.5 months and my whole financial situation has turned around. I'm so excited about the future and what things will be like in another 6 months. All thanks to SR!

I saved enough in my first week of not drinking to buy a new ipod touch. It's scary to think I spent the equivalent of a normal car payment a month or more on booze.

450 a month at least...I notice a BIG change..Getting stuff paid off now..debt is going down. This goes right up there with a new appreciation of food for one of the top 5 added perks!!! It is astounding to put the figures to paper isn't it? WHAT A WASTE!

I'm saving about $600-800 a month. Cheap beer and whiskey was my deal. Bar tabs excluded. Now that I'm not home drinking all the time I'm not real saving that money as its being used for gas, food, and actvities.

About $3000 per year for the last two years. Not counting lost productivity. Went on a vacation in Maine for two weeks this year with the savings.

Averaging a bottle and a half of wine a day, I've saved over five thousand dollars in the last year. Saving money and feeling good too. I can live with that.

I once figured that from the age of 21 to now I've spent $250k on booze and cigarettes...I consider this a conservative estimate.

Couldn't even begin to figure out how much blown $$$ over the years I drank. Many thousands on booze alone per year and how much on mixers, drunken nights if I did go out to the pub, $$$ lent or given out to folks when drunk.

Quite a fortune I suppose considering I spent it all on years that I don't remember and cringe at the bits I do.

Now all our $$$ goes towards productive things

See I was a criminal. So I would say I blew through several hundred thousand over 25 years. None of it mine. Just sayin...

this topic had come up before when i first quit and we all did the math, mind-boggling for sure...I've been making double mortgage principal payments for the last 9 months...I had to replace my furnace and AC compressor, hot water heater and bought a new front door and storm door...( i think all of these qualify for energy tax credits too)

I pay all the bills as soon as they come in and I have the $$$ to do it. (i also have the $$ to get my nails done, buy quality food and a new cashmere sweater).

i am now organized enough to pack myself a lunch every day and save that additional $$ too...i am planning to remodel my 2nd bathroom this coming year...it sure beats pouring the $$ down my throat.

What cost me more are the missed opportunities and/or the opportunities that I pissed away in exchange for a chemical in a can.
