As far as I know....there is no set timeline for either.
AA joke..."How do you get to be an oldtimer?
Don't drink and don't die"
Personally...I consider anyone in their first 3 months a Newcomer.
Old timers have double digit years of recovery.
Tho...since I became an old timer....I perfer the term
"elder"......

I've usually considered people with 20-plus years an "oldtimer". I consider "newcomers" to be those with 90 days or fewer (the first time around--I wouldn't consider someone coming back after "going out" after a substantial time sober to be a "newcomer" although they would be "newly sober").
Custom probably varies from place to place.
What I found interesting is that there are now so many "oldtimers" at the AA International Convention, they keep upping the number of years to qualify. At this year's Convention, it was only those with forty-plus years who were designated "oldtimers" for the "Oldtimer's Meeting". There were over 500 of them at the Convention!!

I USED to think all the older members were "the oldtimers" --still slip into that trap sometimes.
I've been blessed with some reeeeally strong members in my life lately..... one with 50+, 2 with 30, 1 @ 24, 1@23, 1 @ 19 and a bunch around 12 - 15 yrs that are all close friends. Honestly, that one guy @ 51 throws "my" oldtimer's curve off but I'd call an "old timer" anyone with 40+ I only know a couple - most don't make it that long
