Any info on alcoholism and thyroid damage?
I've scoured google trying to find anything I can concering alcoholism and its affect on the thyroid but I can't seem to find anything that states what happens to thyroid levels after long term abstinence.
I've read in this forum and in studies I've found online that it can be toxic to the thyroid and reduce thyroid levels while drinking and during early abstinence. But does the thyroid ever go back to normal?

Only your doctor can know for certain if you have
medical problems.
Please see your doctor for information ..test and treatment.
SR members are not allowed to give medical advice
and it might not be valid for you anyway.
All my best as you find your answers

I'm not really asking for medical advice so much as I'm asking for scientific knowledge. I just want to know if the thyroid ever normalizes. Is that considered medical advice here?

Well, I only came here because I had seen mention of it on here before. I guess that was a mistake.
You may not be doctors or scientists but I'm not a child either. And I don't like being made to feel like one.
I've reached a point of frustration and I'm about to melt down. Thanks but no thanks for your help.

No one is treating you like a child. We simply suggested that you ask these questions of a medical professional. I went back and read your earlier posts and you have been asking these types of questions here since 2006. We aren't medical professionals and cannot answer these questions.
Thyroid complaints, if thats what you have, can be a serious condition.
It's in your best interests to get a professional opinion Eidelon - I think thats probably what the opinion here is reflecting.

As you have been searching for scientific facts for years...
and have not found any......
they may not be in existance....I
Perhaps there is no way to tell?
Many people....not only drinkers....have health issues.

Thyroid function and alcoholism
Coming way late to this discussion, but here is a medical journal article specifically addressing what happens with thyroid levels during early and later abstinence.
Since I'm new here, I'm not allowed to post links yet! But the middle part of the URL is alcalc.oxfordjournals.org/content/41/5/515.full
I found this very useful, as it reinforced my commitment to sobriety by driving home the adverse effects of drinking, especially on someone like me who is hypothyroid.
