Getting Burnt Out- Some thing is missing

Some thing is missing and I don't necessarily know what what it is. I have 27 days clean and sober and I don't really miss alcohol or drugs. Well I miss it, but I don't miss all the crap that came with it, and have no plans or desires to return to that place.

Between working full-time (teaching, dept head, and slew of other things), studing for my Ph.D, training for an upcoming race, going to the gym, going to meetings, calling my sponsor, entertaining my partner, and legal problems looming over my head. Sometimes I feel like I never stop and just get a chance to rest.

When I was drinking or doing drugs, I didn't mind studying all day, but now that I'm not, I just feel like I don't have anything to look forward to on the weekends or at night. It takes a lot of energy to be constantly planning crap and be sober, it's not as easy as having a drink and sitting on the couch or smoking a bowl getting high and being content.

I'm probably just rambling and not making any sense.....

I think it's just the normal adjustment that goes along with living a new way of life.

You're still pretty close to the drinking/getting high, so it still feels weird to have to find other ways to relax/unwind. The familiar is, well, familiar. It takes time and practice.

What are you doing to reward yourself for your progress?

It can be small things... treats to remind yourself
how special you are.

In AA, they talk about the necessity for a 3-part recovery....that when we drank, 3 parts of us got drunk, so to speak. Stopping the intake of booze &/or drugs heals the physical part but the other two are still "drunk.". It might be worth investigating.

Well.....here are things I did in early recovery
some may not suit you but.....
with the money I saved by not drinking....

Got my hair colored and styles....a manicure and pedicure
Started wearing bright colors....
plus scent.... make up and jewelry.

A nightly ritual of a bubble bath...with scented candle
and music.
expanded my CD collection.....Kept favorite snakcs on hand.

Gee....I retain... do most of those treats .
and they still make me feel good about myself.

Whats missing is you ain't getting drunk. I can understand that. I love getting drunk wasted. it's so much more fun than sitting around sober.

But that's the way it has to be for me because I used up all my "free drink with no health risk" passes. So now I have no choice really. Drink and die in 10 or so years or quit and live on through my life.

The choice is everyones.

I think a lot of us really got into that no responsibility sitting on the couch thing...I think leaving that is as much a wrench as anything else.

But I'm glad I did...I really live life and I enjoy it...but, if anything, I work too hard now and I have to always remember that balance is a fine thing to aspire to.

You have a blank canvas ahead - make yr life the way you want it to be, TheEnd
