Yeah i was on it for 5 months...stopped me taking a drink...unfortunately i didn't take the advice of counselor and psychologist and psychistrist and friend in AA and friends and my cat to start on a program of recovery WHILST on antabuse, came off it and went str8 back to drinking.....its meant to help get you to stayaway from booze to allow you time to effect a massive spiritual/psychic/personality change...so my advice would be to get cracking;-)

I used Antabuse as a tool around 14 years ago when it just seemed I couldn't stay stopped. For me, it was an almost immediate sense of relief. While on it, I took positive steps to grow in life that I could not complete while on the vicious on and off drinking cycle. For me it was invaluable during that period of time. It is a serious tool for people that have a serious problem and really want to stay stopped drinking. My experience was very positive and think it is an underused tool for helping those that are motivated, but still caught in the drinking cycle.

I found that the correct way to take antabuse is to crush it up, mix it with water and drink it in front of an Alcohol Counselor. Wait 30 minutes and get up and leave.
If it's not monitored, it won't be taken or it will be barfed up as soon as nobody is looking.
Also I have to include the threat if immediate arrest if you don't take it.
If it's taken any other way the desire to drink will overcome and the antabuse will be tossed the way side.

Welcome back to SR.....

Well....I too used Antabuse in early sobriety.
I did drink whith it.... became so violently ill
I quit the Antabuse.

The catalyst for my reaction was a single split of
champagne ..18 hours after the lowest dosage.

Be sure and check out the afterlife of Antabuse
I kinda remember it stays in your system 4 or 5 days
after the last pill. Also...you do need to have your
doctor monitor liver enzymes if you take the med.

You must be also very aware of foods and
products containing any type of alcohol.
Depending on a persons senstivity....an unknown factor
you can also get quite ill that way too.

I also had to see my doctor monthly for blood test
to make sure my liver was not failing.

Antabuse does nothing for cravings.

I did quit drinking a few months lter
useing God and AA.....no meds.....

About a year ago - a determined sponser had a sponsee do this at my house. I held the antabuse and crushed it in water. However, micromanagement didn't help this woman who ended up drinking on the Antabuse eventually and going to the ER hella messed up.

I had to take it to stay out of jail a long time ago.
It's wicked stuff if you drink on it. I had to "test"it. Believe me it works.
1 beer about killed me. But I never drank on it after that.
As has been said, it does nothing for cravings, except get you past the physical addiction. So like has been said you have to find a way to feel comfortable not drinking.

Howdy, WHen I got sober in 1976. That was one of my tools that I used along with AA meetings. I used it for a good solid four years. Then I tapered off to just AA meetings, which I still go to to this day.
