The movie Crazy Heart...
Have any of you seen it? I watched it last night....it actually made me cry... the torment this character was in, the grip that alcohol had in his life, is all so familiar...I won't share anymore...but I highly recommend it!!
That's the one with Jeff Bridges correct? I saw the previews for it a week or so ago and thought it looked like something pretty good to see. He's a good actor, I'll probably rent it in the next few days or so.

Oh yeah-that's the obsession to drink mentioned in the doctors opinion.
BTW , did you catch the name of that liquor store owner?
LOL
Well, I watched the movie for the first time last night. I thought Bridges was tremendous, but overall I found the movie to be a little too understated for my tastes.
As for the alcoholic aspects of the main character, I found that to be lacking as well. I won't give any specific spoilers, but I'd like to know what others thought about this and of the movie as a whole.
I DID catch the liquor store owner's name...pretty clever

Saw it last night.... Bridges did a fantastic job and he deserved the academy award. I thought it did a nice job of showing a guy who hits bottom...
I didn't like how they approached Maggie's character... like WTF? Why would a high achieving pretty younger woman have anything to do with an old sweaty active drunk like Bad Blake??... That was not believable and hence kind of took away something...
Now, if she had been a needy, much more desperate single mom on the rebound, maybe I'd have believed it...
Good movie.... Tender Mercies with Robert Duvall was better, more believable.

The first was captured pretty well in the scene where he takes the kid to the palyground. But he NEEDS that drink, and that drink takes precedence.
The second is captured in scenes where they show him dozing off with a half bottle of whiskey. He wakes up in the same position- bottle is empty.
That's exactly how I did it- drink ..nod off...wake up-one more slug- nod off --wake ...one more slug. etc etc
I give this movie 5 stars and a Thumbs up. :-)
I just finished watching it. Jeff Bridges deserves his kudos. I always watch these movies about alcoholics very cynically. I expect not to like them. This one did us alcoholics some justice. Within the first ten minutes he slithers off-stage to puke in the trash-can out back of the bowling alley. Dropping his sunglesses into his puke. So, like any good alcoholic, he pulls them out, wipes them off - and goes back onstage. Like it's something done everyday.
His character is the typical maintenance drinker who's screw-ups arn't quite bad enough until the final one. Nevermind he almost killed himself in the accident. It took hurting someone else to bring him to his knees. When he went back for her to proclaim his sobriety and she turned him away, I thought "Here we go, another drinks-himself-to-death movie". Except it didn't happen that way! I thought for sure the hollywood ending would be that miserable "dying right on stage" scenario that people seem to love. But, this one had a happy ending. The right ending. So, I'm thrilled with it.

More Spoilers
I thought the movie did a good job of showing the realities of alcoholism and could really relate. However, I was a little disappointed in how it glossed over recovery. Kinda like, one day he says he's cured and that's it. As we all know here that process is alot more complex with lots of ups and downs. But it was a great movie nonetheless. The scene where he picks up the phone and says to his friend "Wayne.....I wanna get sober." has had a very real impact on my own life, as that's how I felt two weeks ago.
