How many of you lost your job due to alcoholism?

I had a small cleaning business for a couple years. Then started to drink too much, too early, and cancelled too many jobs due to being too drunk to drive there or clean once I got there. The cleaning business gradually died. I know I'd worked drunk a lot of times. I wonder what they thought of me... I know what I thought of myself...

I had vowed for years....."If I get fired over my drinking
I'll quit drinking"

I missed work on a Friday...too drunk to be awaken
by my alarm clock. That was a first for me

I drank all weekend....got fired on Monday morning
was in an AA meeting at noon tho I did not
stop drinking then.

I got re-hired on Wednesday with evening hours.
This sort of thing often happens when you work in
the hospitality industry.

A few months later....to protect my fragile sobriety
I switched to an office job. Less money...less stress
and zero tolerance for drinkers.

Except for the ridiculous amount of $$$ I spend at the bar (every single paycheck), my biggest regret about drinking is my loss of respect in the workforce.

I was once considered extremely reliable.

Now it's more like "he's pretty good when he shows up". Don't know if the damage I created to my professional reputation is repairable.

l lost a good job.
Was warned but did not listen. (could not)
And a reputation like that stays with you...
Try explaining why you want a new job after working 20 years in a well payed relaxed job.

I was kind of like Carol. If I ever started screwing up at work, it meant I was too far gone. I guess thats where I wouldn't let my alcoholism go any farther. There were a LOT of Monday mornings I should have stayed home. But I always showed up and put in a full day. I know I had to reek of booze.
Thats one of the tapes I play if I ever start thinking a beer sounds good. I play it through being stuck, not being able to do anything or go anywhere because I'm too drunk. All the way to the Monday morning hangover. Where I'm sick enough that normal people would go to the emergency room, and I work all day feeling like that....What a way to live.

Thankfully, I never lost a job. But I do feel that my drinking held me back from getting promotions.

Several. First one was at 14 years old. I was washing dishes at as pizza place. The Bus Boys or the Waitresses would bring trays with half full pitchers back for me to wash.
The rest is History.

Lost many jobs, quit many jobs, couldn't hold down a job, had illegal jobs and still couldn't make a living. Yup, life was unmanageable.

Work was that unfortunate interlude that happen between drinking. Got fired, quit and performed below my capacity all because of alcohol and other harmful substances.

Happened a few times back in my 20's. Lost one due to coming in late all the time. Walked out of another on my own...mainly just because it sucked being at work when I was hung over.

Does going to an interview, getting the job, then getting drunk and not showing up at all count? because I did that more than a couple times.

I've lost a few. smelling of booze, slurring my words, becoming abrasive when I was in the process of sobering up on the job.A couple of times I was lucky & they just sent me home. But, of course, my co-workers would learn of it, I would get weird looks from them, the boss would aways check on me with suspision, Etc. And THEN there were the times I would smoke dope on the job.......WHY am I still alive??!!!

to unfairness.

3rd job. Bank Teller. Fired for
cashing a stolen check and

Sober jobs......

service. Left and transfered back
home. Divorced.

6th job. Bank Teller. Didnt pan out.
Took too long to grasp new technology...lol

7th job. Bakery Customer Service. Let go
cause of i so called threatened a
fellow employee. Feuding. Many
trips to office for not following orders.

8th job. Back to bakery. 51yrs. Let go again
for not opening up availability.

My boss caught me sleeping in the server room on a Monday, he told me to never come in like that again, I did...Then enterd a treatment program and they allowed me to come back to work. It feels great going to work with a clear heard, on time, and able to eat breakfest at my desk. I'm so happy to be sober and have a job.

I was a gigging musician.

They allow a lot of latitude in that career for drinking, but I missed too many gigs...and too many notes when I did show up...

Noone ever said anything - but the jobs dried up, as I got wetter.

Lol I've done that waaaaaay too many times to count. I've lost many jobs due to drinking-usually being too drunk to show up.
