What do you do?
that was the problem for me Karl - I couldn't accept why I couldn't just drink one or two every so often on a special occasion.
It took me 20 years but I finally got it - I found it wasn't about strength at all - it was about acceptance.
Acceptance that I was an alcoholic - and I cannot drink alcohol safely. I cannot be sure that I can make it do what I want. Ever.
I wish you well mate - I just hope you don't take 20 years to work that one out like I did.

Back in the day when I was drinking, if it had been my BBQ, that light beer would have just been your first but not your last one. I would have been that annoying but well-intentioned host who just wouldn't feel right about you nursing that itty bitty light beer.
Now that I've quit, I know better than just to have one or a 'sip' to appease someone else's insecurity. And, I don't get upset about it either. I've been there.

Were you unable to maintain? - Did 1 become 2 etc etc......
or I'd stick to that one for a couple of social occasions...with ants in my pants but I'd do it...I'd then think I was cured - and inevitably I'd drink more the next time or the time after...and always find myself back at square one.
I don't know if you're an alcoholic Karl - but if you have a long list of evidence of being the one who always gets too drunk, drinking alone, ending up in trouble or embarrassment when drinking, blacking out, having trouble sticking to one, or not drinking at all...
It could be you got some stuff to think about.

1. Drank a fair bit on a daily bases to "relax" for years
a. Only in the evenings (or afternoons after lunch on holidays)
2. Drink alone - Tick
3. No blackouts / Throw-up etc
4. Almost no hangovers - just not a fresh feeling the next day
a. but would feel anxious at times and Alcohol would fix that.
5. Love the taste of beer... (especially Ales - OZ don't have those)
6. Don't drink anything else really except with certain meals.
7. Never been in trouble due to Alcohol
8. ALWAYS Lucid as I hated seeing people go over the top.
a. but I new I was not sober if that makes sense.
