Where to Find Sober Activity Groups
The title says it all. AA would be a good place to meet others in recovery, but I'm not sure it's for me. Where else can I find places? Google didn't provide much help beyond sober living facilities and rehab programs, which I don't want. I live close to Washington, D.C. so there HAVE to be groups. Meetup.com doesn't have any sober groups in this area either (surprisingly enough).
Despite my social anxiety, I really would like to make some new friends that are in the same boat as me. It will make it a lot easier for me to keep this up in the long run. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

There's a whole list pinned on this site, take a look here and you'll find a bunch of resources

do you mean social activity groups? you might check out some of the big bookstores websites to see if they offer anything, or the libraries too. Especially since you are in a large city...sometimes eve n Facebook.

I found a host of new sober friends in AA
we did all sorts of things of interest
as well as attending meetings....
i lived in D.C. in early sobriety ..found a
group of mostly singles. We met in Georgetown.
You might try church or YWcA or a gym.
Check out what is going on at George Mason University
if that is near where you are.
All my best.....

Here are some suggestions:
1. The forums, chats and groups at this site
2. There are groups called Smart Sobriety
3. Church, Temple or Mosque groups
4. Local library might be a resource.
5. Give AA a try; try different groups...they really vary from young people's groups, groups for Men, women, gays, etc. I never was that intrigued with AA at first but after I realized these folks were able to do something I could not (ie not drink & be happy), I had to take another look. Also I was told to look for the similarities, not the differences and for sure, they were certainly accepting of me, even when I told them I was not a happy camper to be there. They accepted me until I could accept myself...and them.

Thank you all for the suggestions! No matter where I go, I know I'm going to have to force myself to not be shy and make an effort getting to know people. It's going to be hard. It's always been hard! Making friends was so much easier "back in the day" when you were practically forced upon each other in school.
