Crime and alcoholism

Hello.

Has anyone ever been accused of a crime that they couldn't remember because they were drinking so much?

thanks!

Yep but it was a specific criminal act that i could not remember and i was always getting in trouble...not to be confused with the BS excuse that is i cant believe i did it, thats so unlike me it must have been because i was drunk, when you have been in and out of jail for most of your adult life;-)

Maybe apocryphal, but widely circulated, the kid ends up in jail after another drunken night, he comes to in the morning, calls for the turnkey and asks to call his parents so that they can bail him out of jail, turnkey tells him, you can't call them, you killed them last night.

Have heard a few stories of pretty horrific dui's, had one in these parts just recently, based on the published details it seems pretty likely that the driver was blacked out, he killed a family of four and got sentenced to a very long prison term.

I'm sure it happens all the time. When someone drinks enough alcohol, they've killed off enough brain cells to not be able to remember chunks of time. A lot of people have woken up in jail not knowing why. They're still responsible for whatever it is they did to get there.

It never happened to me, but, I have heard countless stories of black-out drinkers being accused of crimes simply because they were easy targets.

I am grateful to say no.

Do you have something you need to share?

maybe this a warning sign for you?

Myself I couldn't tell you the number of times I woke up in jail with no memory of the night before,....but sad enough I got use to it. I had to be homeless for the third time before I considered I "might" have a problem.

Hi and welcome.

No I haven't but I blacked out all the time in my last year or so of drinking as alcohol damaged my brain and memory. It's very scary.

Is this happening to you now?

I've stole alcohol a lot back in the day also. Around thirty years ago, the local store finally got wise & had someone waiting by the door for me. After a struggle, I got free, running across the parking lot & jumping over hoods of cars to get across the street. A LOT of people saw all of this, too. In a small town like where I live, that's BAD. I can also relate to your sense of shame.

I've never committed a crime to the best of my knowledge - but I've certainly has nights where I remembered nothing at all Seeker.

I hope you decide to do something...no drinking - no blackouts

I've had two DUIs and remember both of them, very vividly. Not pleasant. Otherwise no.

I did have people say I did cause them harm and trouble
when I was an unaware blackout drinker.....

The law was never involved....

If drinking is causeing you a problem....any problem
then it's a wise idea to quit drinking
That will also stop the blackouts.

Welcome to SR.....
Please post bit about your situatiomn so we can offer support.
