Not taking myself so seriously
I loved to feel important while on the sauce and to be honest I love to feel self important sober......
While drinking on Valentine's day I would always feel the need to abstain from doing anything and when asked why I'd enter into a long winded rant about my opposition to the holiday and come up with a half baked argument like that it is a creation of the gift card industry or some other kind on nonsense etc. For some reason my other halfs at these times were not happy or amused.
This year (and last) I was able to just shut my mouth and go along with the damn holiday and make my girlfriend happy. It took very little effort and despite the committee in my head telling me that I was "giving in" blah blah blah, it was all painless.
Despite my thoughts, my actions made someone I love happy.....
Sober is good

Hey Chops -- congrats!
You took a big step. You took someone else's feelings, and put them first. That's a big thing to do. It sounds so simple, but sometimes it's so difficult! The Big Book says that selfishness and self-centeredness is the root of our problems. It's a daily lesson for me, I'm still working on it.
So Happy Valentine's Day!
I am sure that she's grateful for your thoughtfulness.

And maybe, at some point, on some level, we can be grateful that the greeting card industry and guys wearing suits in glass office buildings created an opportunity to express our love for another...
