Do All The Alcohol Treatment Involves Group Sessions?
Hi,
Although I don't drink daily, Alcohol has impacted my life in a bad way so I decided to seek help and to stop drinking period. I would like to know if all the alcohol treatment involves group sessions? I'm more of a private person and would much prefer, one on one session treatment. I'm located in New York City. Any Good outpatient center that you might know about also?
Thanks

:reads: Good idea,... to seek help... uhh I do not think all alcohol treatments involve just group sessions, I know AA does a lot of meetings together with people... they like making people feel welcome and exposed to social situations with people who have other problems and such I guess... One on one that's a good idea if it's possible, therapist perhaps... ask your doctor, of course online it's possible.

Welcome to SR ....
Good to know you are planning for sobriety.
Not everyone gets or stays sober with groups.
You will meet members here who have successfuuly
moved forward with no specific recovery method.
Sorry....I did not attend an out patient group....but
went straight into my recovery program...AA.
So I have no experience to share on these

I am seeing an "addiction therapist" along with AA. I find that our one-on-one sessions are very informative and profitable mentally. I find that AA helps me learn about alcoholism and spirituality, while therapy helps me learn more about "why" I drink. This combination is working well so far. Best of luck to you!~GeeQ

Thanks for all your kind words and information. I'm having diffuculty actually finding a addiction psychologist, which I believe will help me more & prefer before doing groups, etc. I would atleast like to give the addiction specialist a try before doing any other method. I don't drink daily but 2 to 3 times a week, or sometimes once a week but can't last longer than 2 weeks without getting drunk, so I drink because of my life situations, vice versa.
I was in therapy for many years while drinking and it never really helped. The fact you are so apprehensive about the group thing tells me that at some point groups will need to be part of your recovery--if you are going to recover. I speak from experience because I was just like you, scared to death of the group stuff, using euphomisms like 'I am introverted,' which for me just meant that I had intense social phobias, which may not be what you have going on but it was for me. I am not totally over my social anxiety but it is much better, largley because I go to AA meetings and interact with people there and am in an outside therapy group. For me, alcohol was a socially isolating experience. So the solution needs to be something the opposite of that, not isolating, but getting out there more, however scary that was at first. I couldn't do this alone, or 1 on 1 with a therapist. Perhaps you can but keep an open mind.
Another idea would be calling the hospital detox center or local detox center and get a referral from them. They likely know who is worth seeing as opposed to every quack in the phonebook.
