well gee, at least a case of beer a week = $30.
a bottle of cheap wine every other night = $12 x 3 = $36
bottle of jager per month = $5 week
bar nights = $30 (lucky that guys buy most my drinks), weekly = $60
extra cigs cuz I chain smoke while drinking = $70
weekly total =$201 week

which is great because I am a single mom of two kids and that could be college money for them or something a lot more useful.

At the bar with my husband, we'd rack up about $40 bucks a night on drinks.

The bottles of vodka that he didn't know I was buying and drinking.. about 6 bucks for a fifth, every other day.

Wow that was a dysfunctional time of my life, that's for sure! Glad I'm alive, and no longer wasting money like that

I was buying my vodka in the local food store, where there are probably about 15 or 20 checkout stands. Toward the end of it all, I never had to show my license to any of those 20!!!! folks for my date of birth, they had it memorized. Yuck.

When I went through what I call 'My SPAR CIDER' stage it was
9 litres of spar cider per day = 13£
and a coupla mickeys of gin here and there = 15£
total = 106£ or roughly 135 US

beer stage
10£ per day = 70£
odd drinks (shorts/mixed cans) = 30£
total 100£ or 128 US

and I smoke at least twenty cigs a day...always, sometimes more

I think they only carded me at the end to make sure I could still function. Asking for my ID wasn't validation, it was a test to see if I could even move beyond the norm.

A 1.75 a day was my breaking point. I had to be a .4 or higher just to feel normal and go to work or the store or do anything. Unfortunately, that was the drunk I was. Sober, I was so scared to go into a store. I ended up isolating hardcore. I wouldn't leave the house because that was the only "safe" place.

I spend everything I make once I pay my monthly bills. Never less than a few hundred dollars a night.

Always end up buying the entire bar several rounds.

$12-20 a day... for years. Day in day out.

My patterns have changed over the years, as has the means of acquisition, so I don't really have a total figure. But July 08-July 09, I probably went through about 300 750ml bottles of Everclear @$15... and maybe another 100 between Jim Bean and Jack Daniels for variety. And for every fifth, 2x 2l of Pepsi (@ $3 in the store by my house, $1 in the market I had to drive to). I used to resent the price of the Pepsi more than the liquor--don't know where my mind was. Oh, wait, yeah.

Those posts about IDing made me laugh. When I first moved here, they told me at the supermarket it was store policy to ID everyone (it's typed in). Last bottle I got the guy didn't even ask if I was 21.

20 by 300 alone is 6000. Six thousand dollars. I know where it went, but I really wonder where it came from... I've been unemployed most of this last year, and don't qualify for unemployment. Man, I coulda used that money a lot better.

I guess it depends on the year. I started drinking when I was 21 (24 now) and I spent at least $50 at the bar every night, usually more. By 22, I realized how expensive it was so I drank cheap stuff at home and went to the bar maybe twice a week. By the time I was 23, I only drank at home because I was too shaky to function in public. Handing my ID to the people at the liquor store was a nightmare! I would finish 1.75 in two nights, maybe even less. I would say maybe $60 a week towards the end.

So 'only' $100-200/mo -- almost always beer.

Working a steady FT job, I could easily afford this.

But nonetheless, I wasn't happy, so I quit..

I would spend about $100. per week. Alcohol is really not expensive or hard to get compared to other drugs. It's almost more expensive to Smoke Cigarettes. Still, it adds up. I am $2,500 richer for the Six 1/2 Months I have been Sober. The thing about being an active Alcoholic is I HAD to buy the Alcohol whether I wanted to or not.

Since this is actually the thread that led me to SR and it became active again I feel compelled to post my own story.

First half of College: Probably about $50-60 a week during the school year. A case or two as well as a night out on the town. I was pretty broke during this time.

Second half of College:A couple of internships led to much more disposable income for me. Probably about $120-$150 a week, mostly going out to the bars.

1.5 Years after College:Gosh... probably about $600-$800 a month at periods. I went out quite frequently and had plenty of loose cash thanks to working fulltime with no kids or significant other.

The last 1.5 Years:Much less frequently. I mostly drank at home, and maybe spent about $30 a week on average. Occasional trips to the bar: about $30 times two or three a month.

Overall, I've easily spent well over $15,000 on booze since I started about eight years ago (that may not seem like much to some but keep in mind I'm only 25 and that could have basically paid off my student loans). And that's just on the booze... no accounting for lost relationships, lost opportunities, cost of future health issues due to my past drinking, etc.

In short, I'm very glad I quit.
