I didn't really know either, but I just googled it. It looks like all that happens is the cops go by to check on someone. I think the depth of it varies from city to city and state to state.
I believe they mainly do it for the elderly. You might try googling it for the area you live in, or just call your local police and ask.

a wellness check is just that, a check on someone's safety and wellness. A lot of times this is the 'check' that police can do if someone is worried that someone is being abused, neglected, OR in danger of harming or neglecting their own needs putting them in danger.. In Denver here, there's also Mobile Crisis (which is just that.. ) through the county mental health system where crisis counselors can be called out to 'check' on someone and assess their safety.
