Need help...Where to go?
Hey all,
Long time lurker sometimes poster...Thinking i really need some help here.
Have been seeing a social worker to help with some stuff after my Mother's death this past September but think i can really benefit from some focused work work on substance abuse. I think AA is of course is the obvious but feel some other therapy could be of some help....Any thoughts for some help? Feel like i am dying here or, rather, killing myself and i cannot figure out why. I am in NYC if anyone has any recommendations locally.
Thanks in advance and for this website; i check here frequently.

hi skolc - welcome to SR!
AA is a great place to start (and stay, for most of us)
and you will find that they're the most 'recovery connected' individuals
you'll ever want to meet.
anything aa oriented in your area can be found on the national website - aa.org
I think there's a link to them over in the 12-step forum up in the stickies.
Now, as far as other organizations up there in NYC ...
My first reaction is to contact mental health.
They'll know everything from psychologists to grief management.
If you're seeing a social worker, even that person will more than likely
have a listing of other organizations close to you.
But my first recommendation is the AA thing.
Welcome!
I hope you'll keep posting, and let us know how it's going.

I found an addictionologist (head doc who specializes in addiction). What a relief that was. I did need some medication, but I also needed a doctor who understood.
My thoughts are with you.
