jail for me
just found out I will being doing some time in jail for my drinking problems I have encountered. Wondering about jail food oddly enough. I love food and have been trying to get a gauge of jail food, for anybody who has ever done a stint. I wont be in long probably. But long enough to have to eat there. Wondering if anybody had any experience about jail food.
I had to do 12 hours for a DUI and the food sucked. I gave it away except for the cake which was edible.
You probably will not be that hungry. I wasn't. I was anxious until I made myself relax and actually played cards with some inmates.

Can you say "mystery meat"?
Absolutely make sure you have somebody from the outside to put money on your books so you can order commissary food once a week. I'm sure it varies I was told some of the other county jails where much better but the one I was in the food was a nightmare. Bologna sandwiches every day and it just goes down hill from there. It's not there job to make you feel comfortable......and they don't.

It depends on the jail. There's lots of little urban myths about jail. The food in the little city jails where people do overnight stays or wait to get transferred isn't too great. But if you're in a place that's in any way extended stay, then the food can be better, more like school cafeteria food. I did 3 days one time in a county for truancy, and that's what the food reminded me of - exactly like school cafeteria food.
Im not crazy and neither am I

i hear from people who "know" that jail food is several steps down from madatory 2 week inpatient treatment facilities run by the state of (M)assachusetts.
(for OUI second offenders)
Hopeully that will be the closest i get to experience.

Sorry to hear that but everything happens for a reason. If you survived drinking I'm sure you'll survive jail however this is a reinforcement for me.
OMG- this has made me totally sick to my stomach. The last binge I had I drove drunk ( don't really remember it). That was over 13 months ago. This is just another reason to never even risk drinking again. My fine dining a** put up with rehab food for 8 days. No choices but it wasn't too bad. I just gained about 10 pounds from the fat.

It certainly was not my proudest moment in my life, but I did about 3 weeks in a county jail back about 9-10 yrs ago, and the pic Zencat posted is pretty accurate as to what the food is like.
You'll normally get a tray that has something that resembles meata portion of veggies, some sort of bread, and a juice/milk. And then sometimes a cookie or 1 cup of pretzels. The food is the least of the problem though, boredom is the real killer. After all a person can only sleep so many hours out of the day.
It's far different than prison though. In county jail it's normally a row of cells (about 8-10) that house around 20 guys and the cells are all off a main room that has metal tables and a TV. So there's no bars on the cell doors since the door on the main room is whats locked. So don't worry about it being like prison or something you see in a movie, it's not like that, but it's certainly not somewhere you'd like to go back to though.
And you better learn how to play Uker because that's one of the main time passers
You'll be alright though hang in there and keep your mind right and you'll get through it.

Binge eat before you go in. How long are you in for? It's all nasty from what I've experienced and heard. If ever there was an incentive not to go back to jail it's the FOOD!! Seriously though... Focus on the real stuff, if you're going to jail; the food should be the least of you concerns. Get chummy with the strongest gang around and figure out something you can contribute that is worth their while that doesn't involve you body. Just my two cents.
Not long but long enough to have to eat there? What, a day?
don't worry about the food.. there will be plenty around to keep you from having an appetite more than likely. I can't even remember the food in jail.

Some tips:
The food - It is an absolute no no to throw it away if you don't want it. Give it to someone.
Find out the time immediately before you go in. "What time is it" will be one of the first questions you are asked by another inmate.
Be friendly but not soft
No ethnic slurs of any kind better leave your mouth
Treat the CO's with respect and they will usually do the same of you
Brush up on your funny stories and get ready to play alot of cards and dominos
It wasn't so bad, but I never want to go back.
