Experts: Women are drinking more, DUIs are up - *****! News
NEW YORK – It seemed too horrendous even to imagine. But the case of the mother who caused a deadly wrong-way crash while drunk and stoned is part of a disturbing trend: Women in the U.S. are drinking more, and drunken-driving arrests among women are rising rapidly while falling among men.

So, how exactly does one use a penis to drive well? That it's a requirement is news to me:

Ah
I didn't say anything about us being a better driver.
The police are enforcing the DUI a lot stricter then, they used to for a fact.
I heard on the radio this morning that the family of this woman are challenging the toxicology results, they said she never drank so maybe they got the results wrong.
I think if people would put down their stupid cell phones while driving!there would be a lot less accidents there are more accidents from people on the phone than DUIs

In any case... it is really sad! Although not too often, I did drive drunk, and I am beyond fortunate that I never harmed anyone else. I'm guessing that the majority of us drove drunk at one time or another, because that is just a piece of the illness.
I don't think it's a men vs. women issue... It is an alcoholic issue.

I used to pride myself on the "fact" that I would not drive while drinking except in the most dire circumstances. I never hesitated to drive while high on anything else, but that's another story. I know women like me who would not climb behind the wheel--but wouldn't hesitate to get in the passenger's seat with someone else highly intoxicated.
I don't think women are drinking more. I think they're getting caught more and aren't as likely to trust someone else over themselves when it comes to getting from point A to point B. There's also slightly less stigma attached to women seeking treatment. We also aren't as concerned with hiding our drinking because it's not "lady-like."

Could just be that Women are mixing booze and pills more than ever because prescription use is higher than ever before. Pills amplify the effects of booze.
This just reinforces the fact that I will never pick up a drink again. And I believe they aren't drinking more but like someone else said, getting caught. I NEVER drove drunk with my Children in the car (once when I was 19 I did drive home drunk and it terrified me enough when I didn't remember getting home to NEVER do it again!).
It's sad that this happening and I've noticed the worse things get, the more people are drinking and getting high. It's just bad all around =(

Can they determine if she was acutely intoxicated, or can they only detect that she smoked some time in the prior weeks?
If it's possible, I would think acute detection would require the full tox panel, which doesn't come back for weeks.

A broken, 1.75-liter bottle of Absolut vodka was recovered from Schuler's burned-up minivan on the Taconic State Parkway. Schuler's blood alcohol level was more than twice the state's legal limit, she had undigested alcohol in her stomach and high levels of the key ingredient in marijuana in her system, the Westchester County medical examiner's report said.

From Drug Toxicology For Prosecutors:
"The presence of a drug metabolite in a biological fluid may or may not reflect consumption of the drug recently enough to impair driving performance. For example, the presence of a marijuana metabolite in urine may not be, by itself, a reliable indicator of either driving impairment or of recent exposure to the drug. However, an elevated concentration of THC (the principal active component of marijuana) in blood may be consistent with recent use of the drug and related driving impairment." - p.8
"Because the drug dose usually is unknown, it is generally not possible for a toxicologist to determine exactly when the drug was administered. However, the toxicologist may be able to infer an approximate window of drug use. For example,THC increases very rapidly during marijuana smoking, and upon cessation, is eliminated rapidly from the blood. As a result, elevated levels of THC in blood are a good indication of recent drug use." - p.35

In California the law changed so that if someone is stopped and is under the influence the officer is mandated to arrest them— he has no choice. Before, it was under their discretion. Maybe this is the case in other states. I think this probably accounts for some amount of the statistical rise over the decade that they use in the article. If I were to guess, I would say cops were probably more likely to arrest more men for DUIs before and let more women off with warnings. Just a hypothesis.
