My story.... Sober since Fri the 24th.

God delivered me from this.. I prayed and prayed... It worked...

Been drinking since 16.. REALLY heavy the last 5 years.. I've quit many times before for vanity reasons (getting fat). lol.. Usually 6 months at a time.... This time is for good.. Thanks to this forum for the numerous posts and stories and great people. Especially Carol..

Weird thing, I didn't get any withdrawel symptoms other than the typical brain fog and not the greatest sleep.. But sleep none the less. I'm eating great.. I did consult my doctor who had been begging me to quit for a while.. He prescribed librium and said don't take it unless you get symptoms, so I didn't... So I"m completely clean, no caffeine.. However still smoking cigs. Those are next..

I have no cravings, but I've been popping sweet tarts here and there..

I'll keep everyone updated, I can't stress enough for those afraid of the withdrawels, yes, most people get them, but for all you know you might get lucky like me.. With the help of God...

My wake up call? Well, when I first joined this forum, I went to the doctor for blood work.. Liver enzymes were 312.. So, I decided to cut down by 2/3rds.. I went back 3 weeks later.. The enzymes were 124.. Still high, but I figured, well, my liver must be ok.. So what did I do??

Started drinking like normal.. lol.. That weening yourself off stuff does NOT work! (atleast for me)..

So anyhow, of course my liver was back to the 300's.. And then I came home Friday and was doing research on liver disease.. And I seen this post..

I am 34 years old, and I went to the emergency room about week ago for extreme stomach pain. I had occasionally vomited blood; I believed it was an ulcer. I didn't think anything about the dark color of my stool, except that I haven't made a solid bowel movement in months, if not a year. I figured it was all related to my ulcer problem. Boy was I wrong. At the ER, I underwent an ultrasound and three CT scans. I have been a heavy drinker since I was about 16 years old. The CT scan revealed my ulcer, which was no surprise, and then the ER doctor asked me to sit down. I did, and he then revealed to me that I have cirrhosis of the liver. He told me in the best case, I have 17 to 24 months to live. Since I don't have insurance, this is my fate. My hands are shaking as I type this. Sorry, I just can't believe that I have just been given an expiration date like what's on a battery or a gallon of milk. The only thing I can say to this is: If you have children and they like to party like I did, please inform them of the fate that might be in store for them.
That is EASILY me. I'm 34.. And I've been drinking since 16....

I told my wife (which I guess you could say is an enabler, she doesn't drink but she never nagged except when my health was in risk)..

I told her honey, thats it... And thats my story..

The site, smell or thought of liquor makes me sick.

I drank to be honest, because I enjoyed it.. I didn't drink because I was depressed, or worried, or my wife left or kids don't love me, or I got fired..

My health is more important than any buzz... I wouldn't want to put my family through that kind of pain.

Thanks again folks!

I'll keep ya updated.

I drank because I loved it too.. until it nearly killed me.

I'm glad you're here. Print that and post it somewhere that you read it often. Very serious medical prognoses aside, I kept drinking. Luckily I was able to quit before I got an expiration date caused by the drinking I was doing.

I had a doctor tell me once that it commonly takes around 7 years of 'heavy drinking' to develop into liver disease. Seven.. that's nothin.

We should chat sometime.. I hope your detox and recovery is going as well..

A side note.. And this is CRAZY..

As of last week, I was type 2 hypertensive..(160/105) and was perscribed BP medicine to start taking..

As of today... I'm normal and getting better.. 110/82...

I NEVER knew that it affected blood pressure THAT much..

Hey bud,

Check your inbox, I sent you a pm. Oh yeah, about the Blood pressure....hitting the hooch is known to raise your BP. It's good that you got that checked out and it went down. All the best.

Red face

I drank because I felt good, felt bad, was bored, excited, apathetic, peaceful, was angry,ad infinitum. I drank because I am alcoholic. you are in the right place

Yup, me too! My first post was in the Biker In Recovery forum, and I'll be visiting the newcomer's thread as soon as I can.

I'll be following this particular thread with special interest...

MY last detox was a gift too and I'm not going to let that go to waste! Congrads getting here.

A number of us run, bike and other things to stay active. I can tell you that buzz from exercise is of far better quality than alcohol on its best day.

There is no hangover from exercise... unless you count minor aches!

That is a great quote. I used to do triathlons until drinking gave me atrial fibrilation. Now that I am recently sober and back into training I have signed up for two races next year and will make training my focus.
