My take on the "dark side" is that it sucks when you drink again and have to start over. So, yes, I can definitely see how that would be the dark side to counting days.

And so your solution is to just not count days?

I don't care if someone counts days or not, but it's brilliant logic.

I actually find it better to lie about my sobriety date and keep it to myself. At least I get respect then at AA meetings.

That's pretty twisted, but hey, if it works for you who am I to say.

It's not twisted I like the respect I get when I tell people "I've been sober 7 months!" If you are under 30 days you are treated as a AA loser. The thing is no one really knows someones sobriety date. It's easy to lie.

Depends on what you call "Knowing Reality"

If you are talking about academic, business or street-wise reality I agree.

If you are talking about self-awareness or personal relationships nothing could be further from the truth.

The author would agree with you that it sucks to go back to day zero and have to start all over. However, and to paraphrase, the author also suggests that it is hurtful to some and nonsensical. IOW, even if you have a slip but have been abstinent, one is still doing better than before. I agree with this logic.

I shared the 10 myths with my therapist tonight and he said basically the author is saying of opposite of all prevailing thought. At any rate, my therapist is going to be getting the book and thought it is awesome.

Not according to the author and I agree. Now - while I haven't been a shining example of success in sobriety terms, I do have great insight into what drives my addiction and other issues. I am not "out of touch" with reality at all. I recognize alcohol will destroy relationships, health, finances, careers and the like. A lot of people can recognize this and yet be accused of being in "denial" as they may not conform with prevailing thought as to how to beat the demons.

I really wish I could quote the whole thing (it would make much more sense), but due to copyright issues it is not possible. I'd suggest anyone read it who is open to looking at things from another angle.
