On Antabuse around drinkers? Will I be OK?

Hey all,

I'm not worried about psychologically, I mean physically being around alcohol can I have a reaction? from the fumes or something.

I've always been a hermit drunk, I don't like to drink in public so in my several stretches of sobriety I would go to bars with friends no problem, and not drink, so I'm really not worried about temtation, just a physical reaction?

Anyway, I started taking antabuse on Monday, I'm going to a wedding out of town in a month and to see some friends. I'll still be taking the pills but there will be alot of drinking around me. My friends may want to go to a bar, I'm still not worried about temptation, but am I in physical danger of having a reaction when I'm around alot of alcohol or do I just need to make sure I don't get anything spilt on me or that I mistake someone elses drink?

I'm going to be very watchful of my glass at the wedding and if we go to a bar I'm going to make sure and order only bottled water so there can be no accidents.

but could just being around it cause a reaction?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks all.

Everybody is different. Some can even drink one or two and some can't even put on after shave. If I was to bet, I would bet that you would be OK with just being in the bar and not drinking. I would imagine that on the way outside chance you did have a reaction it would be very slight if you were to notice it at all.

I have been on Antabuse and had no problem with hand sanitizers or stuff like that. I avoided wine or alcohol laced sauces though, which can be difficult, let me tell you if you are in a restaurant. I would always ask if there was any alcohol in something, explaining that I was allergic. I can't imagine that the fumes or a spilt drink would cause a reaction, but that's just my opinion.

I think you will be fine. I'm and Antabuse now & find it's a great tool in sobriety. I did drink on Antabuse once years ago. It took about 2 beers before I started to get a red face, rapid heart beat ect... It was not fun at all.

I was a bartender and was using Antabuse.
45 hours a week pouring alcohol...
I had no physical reaction ....

until I drank a split of champagne
18 hours after I had taken the lowest doese of Antabuse.

Immediately....red face and hands...heart pounded....cold sweats
.projectile vomiting....spliting headache.

Glad to know you will not be drinking on Antabuse...

l use it and was told that only realy drinking a sip would bring on a reaction.
l use aftershave with no problem and can be around people who drink.
Just be very carefull that you don't drink out of the wrong glass by accident.
At least it keeps you away from alcohol, solving a lot of problems for you.
