Seizure question please help
Hello everyone,
My name is Monique & im new here. I have been drinking heavilly for the last 3 years and I really want to stop. On Sunday I had a dinner party and over did it majorly. I was hung over yesterday but still able to function during the day. Last night when I was trying to go to sleep my legs started to jerk and it would come and go. Then at one point my right arm would jerk. This kept me up all night. I was just wondering if this was a seizure or has anyone ever experienced this? Any information would be helpful thanks.

That wasn't a seizure, but if your having random convulsions, one is probably coming. Same thing happened to me. My recommendation is get to a doctor.
Take care of yourself. You don't want to start with DT's. Go see a doctor.

Does it happen right as your about to fall asleep? I used to get these things called myoclonic twitches or hypnic jerk (see wikipedia). Essentially as you are trying to fall asleep your brain and mind sends a shock through your body because it thinks you are dying, or something of that nature. I used to get them after not having quality sleep for awhile.
I found that magnesium citrate and 5-htp helps.

Please consult your doctor. This forum is great for sharing experience, strength, and hope but we are not qualified to provide medical advice. Even if there was someone here who is a doctor, I would be leery of anyone who tried to diagnose me without ever having examined me.
Here is my experience, I had a similiar reaction when I was having physical withdrawls from a medication I had been taking. The reaction lasted about 2 weeks. The symptoms you are experiencing could be a sign of many different medical problems that is why it is best diagnosed by a physician.
Keep us updated if you get a chance.

Hypnic Jerk?
I am freaked out right now, although I am better I drank heavily for about 8 days and am not new to benders. I am new however, to withdrawls. Man it was horrible for a couple days there but im on day three and I havent been able to sleep for these last three days. i can my body wont let me i am having what i learned are hypinic jerks. wtf Will this go away? Do I need heavy medication. I am 38 male.
I have never had a seizure but I'm sure I was awful close to one. For the first 3 weeks after I quit, my body would randomly jerk all night long.
My fear of that is a huge motivator to stay sober.

Alcohol is a Central Nervous System depressant. Abuse and withdrawal of/from the substance can cause a variety of symptoms: tremor, neuropathy, seizure, atrial fibrillation, hallucinations, coma and death (to name a few.)
Please go see a medical professional, and please be HONEST about your usage and symptoms so they have a chance of helping you. God Bless and good luck!!!

Hi Panzertotem -
While we can't give medical advice on the forums, what you described (the insomnia and muscle jerking) are fairly common in alcohol withdrawal. How long it lasts is an individual thing, but I found that things got a lot better within a week of being sober.
Of course, if you have any symptoms that worry you, it's best to see a doctor. We're here for support though.... so let us know how you're doing.
