The Alcoholic Illness
" An illness of this sort - and we have come to believe it an illness - involves those about us in a way no other human sickness can. If a person has cancer all are sorry for him and no one is angry or hurt. But not so with the alcoholic illness, for with it there goes annihilation of all the things worth while in life. It engulfs all whose lives touch the sufferer's. It brings misunderstanding, fierce resentment, financial insecurity, disgusted friends and employers, warped lives of blameless children, sad wives and parents - anyone can increase the list. "

The reason is that cancer strikes many people who have no way to stop the progression of their disease, and there is no cure in many instances. There is no AA for cancer. In many instances, cancer strikes people who have lived perfectly clean lives. Alcoholics all have a way to survive, and your own actions can save you. AA and other rehabilitation programs are ways to stop the disease from killing you. I would rather be an alcoholic any day of the week then have cancer. Cancer can be unstoppable regardless of what you do, and remission has nothing to do with your willingness to stop doing something that is bad for you. Alcoholism can be controlled and remission will happen with effort and determination and faith. Cancer many times cannot be stopped no matter what you do. Please don't even suggest that alcoholism is in the same ballpark as cancer. It is not even a close call.
