Ok I see both sides of this. Like DK I dearly love to kareoke and in fact when I went back (alone) after 4 days of trying to quit in 2004 I found myself quickly drunk again. I told myself that I could go and not drink, no problem. My friends in the bar who drank like I did saw me sans a drink and set about correcting that "problem" and I let them. It took me another month to get to my current date of sobriety.

I have not given up kareoke. I love it even more now as I gain confidence and constantly increase my selection of songs, kick *ss and take names. What is different is I am now married to a kareoke nut who is also in recovery. We watch out for each other and know that all we have to do is say the word and we leave, no debate and no questions asked. Sobriety comes first. Also we don't do this often in bars, it is an occasional date night activity. We have found sober venues to do it and prefer those.

I would never put myself in a position of being in a bar on a regular basis as I have no desire to play russian roulette with my sobriety. But kareoke is a special treat and I totally get where DK is coming from on this. I would just say to you to please be careful. We are fond of you and want to see you succeed!

Hugs,
Kellye

I rarely get out more than once a week and usually go on a week night when it's slow and you get lots of turns. And you don't have to deal with the weekend warriors who are tore up from the floor up and have no business picking up the mic. Especially the groups that come up to sing... most are there atleast as much for the singing as the drinking. Of course, there are always a few who make drinking very unattractive...

Door, you scared the crap out of me with the title of your thread! I'm glad you had a good time!

Veeeeeery interesting thread. I look at this from a different angle. I never drank in bars. When I wasn't drinking myself into oblivion at home, I drank at family gatherings (pathetic, I know), business meetings, things like that. Well, I can't NOT go to family gatherings or business meetings. I just can't. I can go and NOT drink, though. And you know what, it's kinda fun to see who makes an a$$ out of themself and/or can't remember what they did the night before.

I am NOT going to drink. That's my choice. I don't care where I'm at.

Yeah one of the places we go there are a crew of regulars that are there every week and they either don't drink period or barely drink. Then there is this one couple who get really messed up and to watch that makes me so glad I don't have to live like that today.

Then you have the ones who need the liquid courage who have no business being up there and the ones so drunk you can't understand them and so on and so forth.

I really thought when I got sober that there was no way I could sing sober but the more I do it the easier it gets. Now we have branched off into singing with bands at sober family venues. Just got a call tonight to sing at a new place Saturday night. I'm terrified yet excited. This is a gift of sobriety for me as I would have never sought sober venues before.

So DK do what makes you happy just stay on top of your emotional state and get out if thing feel off. Better safe than sorry!

Hugs,
Kellye

I went to bars to DRINK, not sing karaoke.
Hell, I didn't fit in when I was drinkin. Never could relate to the bar thing, and still can't. I understand why people do, but I just can't relate to it.

I DO NOT SOUND LIKE WILFRID BRIMLEY!

No diabeetus here, Rimmy... did you ever see the Family Guy movie where they mock those commercials? "We ran out of vanilla ice cream and I took it out on the dog..." hahahahahaha, ahhh Family Guy...

Farmtown Flowmatic, eh? I see a double album in the not too distant future...

I'd be happy with an EP. A couple country songs, a couple rap joints... singin', rappin', 40 year old (almost) white boy... like a sober Kid Rock!

I love Family Guy... But don't think I saw that one. Don't always get to watch it religously

i think the wilfrid brimley thing is from the famil guy movie, but i might be wrong.

It's funny, my friend JK (the one who christened me Emillion) is speaking at my home group tonight, and he and I used to drop mad verses together... silly, but super fun. I'm gonna introduce him as the speaker tonight, and I kinda want to rhyme it but I want to show respect for the rooms as well... what do you think?

Well... I've never been much for formality, but people are always crackin' jokes at speaker meetings... I think it would be fun, and most importantly, I think he would appreciate it.

I can't say I've made any friends at karaoke. I'm hoping that I can meet some sober peeps to hang out with at AA. The possibility of making sober friends and networking is what motivates me to go to meetings.

I hope you do meet some people at AA you can connect with and hang out with, DK. I've made some deep and lasting friendships within AA, people who are just as nuts as me too!

Seems like a wonderful idea doorknob, In my area there is an NA meeting, not AA which has a ton of people around my age group. My main meeting, I am probably the youngest there by at least 10 years

The Alano Club here is pretty cool. They have food and an expresso bar. Hangin' out there kinda reminds me of inpatient treatment. That's the only place I've attended meetings so far. They have enough there that I really don't have to go anywhere else. And it's off the first exit when I get into Spokane, so it's very convenient. I guess they had a couple karaoke nights there, but bagged it for not enough attendance. I'm gonna ask around and see if I can hook up with the person who was running it.

I plan on checking out an NA meeting as well. They have a candlelight meeting on Saturday at the Alano Club, but most of their meetings are at another clubhouse that is in the not so great area of town. I've passed by it a few times, but never stopped...
