I do not want to find God
I do not want to find God
I want to give up the drink without him. I know that many people find salavtion in him, but I've never bought into teh concept of religion and I'd like to quit of my own accord.

God can be many different things to many different people.
Do you perhaps need some Good Orderly Direction (G.O.D.) in your life?
We all do, and 'god' can mean anything you want it to mean, or be anything you want it to be.

Welcome, El Chupa.
I don't believe that there is any deity intervening on the behalf of alcoholics, enabling their sobriety. I wouldn't sweat it...

Chupa, I don't want to find God either. I sure as heck tried to while I was in AA, prayed out loud and on my knees every day just like I was told to... did me more harm than good. I firmly believe that you don't need any "Higher Power" to stay sober. (A higher power, sure, but as soon as you start to capitalize it you might as well just say God.)
Ten and a half months in, and the atheist approach seems to be working for me. Knock wood.

To me, needing a higher power to live a sober life simply means I can't do it on my own. How many times I told myself "that's it...I will never drink again" only to end up worse off than I was before...
I also think that a higher power is the key to working the AA program. There are other ways to quit drinking but AA is what works for me.
I would much rather rely on a higher power & stay sober than rely on self will & be a drunk. That's what it comes down to for me.

You are the only one who can get you sober or drunk. No one else can do it for you. I believe in God/HP but I got myself sober and keep myself sober.
I know a man who is very active in AA and adament non-believer. He knows the BB and sponsors many men in recovery. I hold a great deal of respect for him and what he brings to those in recovery.
His sponsor of 20 years is a well known minister in our city. Go figure! All an alcoholic needs is the desire to stop drinking. LOL

*throwing in my two cents* Your higher power can be anything.
The God that you speak of (in the bible) gave you free-will. Free-will has you drinking, free-will gets you sober.
"god" can be you writing down your worries on a piece of paper and tossing them in a fire. A release, symbolic. I hope you find something that eases your mind.

I've bumped this thread as I have been thinking about this a lot the past few days. I am an agnostic, to the extent that I keep my ideas open as to the nature of the universe. But I have never been able to accept the concept of a prescribed deity, who is as we say he is, according to our own scripture. I am very pleased to read in this thread that others have found "God substitutes" and as I looked to the sky with the thought "if, Mr. God, you are up there, why the hell do I feel like this"? I am sure many of those who have religion and "find God" after facing their alcoholism will have a reason as to why this is so. But, for me I feel that the greatest challenge is doing by, ultimately, your own efforts as its only going to be ourselves that keep us sober for the rest of our lives.
Just wanted to note that down.
