Friends...
My friend Steve was an incredible man...he was my sons best friends father. I met Steve when my son was in 2nd grade, at a christmas show at our local elementary school.
Our children became fast friends as did Steve and I. Steve was a hard working man...loved his family and would do anything for a friend.
One day he came by to pick up Michael from my house, I was in the yard laying pavers for a walkway in my garden, covered in mud I ran to the front to let him know the boys were down the street skateboarding at the dead end.
I stopped dead in my tracks as it seemed his SUV turned into a Corvette...black and beautiful. His eyes sparkled...”Beautiful ain’t she” he said. “OMG Steve” I replied...”I know” he said...”I just turned 50 and I decided to treat myself.”
I proceeded to run into my house for some change...don’t know why other than my Dad taught me that when someone gets a new car you throw change in it...good luck I guess...a ritual I enjoyed!
When I came back out he threw me the keys...said “take her for a spin”...”No” I replied “I am covered in mud.” To which he replied...”It’s just a car Dawn she won’t mind.”
Steve and I got in the car and we were off...what a ride! Three days later, November 20th, my friend Steve was hit in the head by a crane on his job site...he died instantly.
At his funeral I was asked to speak and I shared this story...My friend knew that cars and houses and money meant little...it was friendship and family that was important. I miss Steve, never so much as today...His son stopped by...19 now...proud owner of a beautiful black corvette. Allow me to share his wisdom...
Thanks for listening.

Thanks, Dawn, for sharing this wonderful reminder of the true gifts of life.
I know that you'll be just as proud of your son. He has a wonderful mother.
Hugs and loving thoughts to you.

Very powerful share bugs, thank you. Reminded me of my friend Scott. He held his hand out to me in early sobriety and saved my life, since then I've had the chance to do the same back.
I hope I never take friendships for granted, I did that too much when I drank.
