Constipation I tried to do a search, but didn't find the answers I was looking for. I quit drinking beer on 9.1.08. I was drinking about 6-9 beers every evening. Every time I quit drinking I develop terrible constipation. This time I tried to do everything right, I exercised, drank lot of fluids and ate a balanced diet. Last night I took 2 PO Dulcolax in desperation and had 14 hours of painful cramping. This resulted in diarrhea, but I still feel blocked. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance. |
Sorry, never had that problem. If I were you I would get to your doctor ASAP. You never know what the problem could be. I hope everything turns out alright for you. Shawn |
I got blocked up, too, when I'd stopped drinking. Had to change the old diet for awhile to get more bran into me! For some reason, coffee really helped clear things out for me. :) Best thing is to talk to your doctor about it. This, too, shall pass. |
yup, happened to me everytime i quit! coffe does help and so does metamucil. if all else fails theres x-lax or manesium (something),its a liquid that will clear your bowels out but be near a toilet. |
I strongly suggest asking your doctor. That way you will know for certain if this needs medical attention.....Welcome to our Alcoholism Forum Congratulations on your sober time |
My problem is just the opposite: I drank 2 bottles of vodka a day for 27 years I haven’t had a solid bowl movement for 22 years I have suffered from incontinence of urine for 13 years I have to take Viagra twice a day just to keep from peeing on my shoes :jail |
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your clean time and WELCOME to SR! Although it would be a good idea to go see your Dr. just to make sure you don't have any kind of blockage, but more than likely, you're body is just getting adjusted to the changes you are going through. I know when I was drinking, I never had a problem with constipation, quite the opposite! lol So now, when you aren't putting the alcohol in your system, you're body isn't used to not having it there so you're system is now all screwed up. From experience, the thing that works the best for me is to use Metamucil or a similar type of fiber drink on a daily basis. Have yourself a nice big, cold glass of orange or apple juice everyday along with adding alot of water to your diet. Fresh fruit and veggies help too. Keep up with the exercising and eatting a balanced diet. You need to remember, your body is also making adjustments since you've quit drinking. . . the changes aren't just on an emotional and spiritual level. It's only been, what, five days? You have a lot going on and I imagine in no time at all everything will be running smoothly. Maybe I shouldn't use the word "run" when talking about poopin huh? lol And yes, this too shall pass, Judy |
I've had this happen to me as well. Its more than likely caused by your pancreas and liver trying to get back on track so you aren't getting the correct amount of enzymes in your stomach. I suggest a high fiber/low fat diet for a few weeks. Next time you are at the library, check out the Fiber35 diet. It does a lot more than help you poop! =) |
I am having the same problem right now. :c004: Very constipated! Its better than a hangover anytime as far as I can see! I think drinking lots of water and getting fiber is a big factor! |
A little too much information here! :lmao I deal with this same problem though. Please see a doctor! I take a fiber solution every morning which helps a little. One thing I've found that works extremely well is a product called Colon Clenz. You can buy it off the shelf at Wal-Mart for around $7 for 40 capsules. All-natural, it worked great for me. |

The good stuff in your gut you can replace too! Probiotics will do that trick (most yogurt and supplements do the trick.) That's something anyone of us who has just recently stopped drinking ought to consider. In fact, it might be good for hill11's problem. Strange to hear some of your stories, for me the problem went away when I quit. |
Go to the Doctor. |
DG and SQ: "This too, shall pass?" *GROAN* :lmao Okay, but seriously now... Hello, hill. Welcome to SR. I know this post is old, but if you are still having problems, please see your doctor. |
salt water flush 2 tablespoons of sea salt in one quart of distilled water...drink all...will wash intestines out...dont plan to go anywhere for about an hour...its called a salt water flush... |
Grnt, Welcom to SR. You might notice that this particular thread is 3-1/2 years old. |
Welcome to SR GrnT D |
I know this is a very old thread, but with key words this still comes up number 1 on a google search. I've been having the same problems recently. I eat high fibre as per normal and drink plenty of water but have still felt blocked up after quitting booze. As someone has suggested, adjusting to not having alcohol in the system is the reason. I know a glass of red would have me running to the toilet. Just thought i'd add that caffeine seems to act as somewhat of a laxative with me. Other than high fibre & plenty of water, people having these problems will have to allow their bodies to adjust to the change. 6-7 days abstaining from alcohol should seem some relief from the constipation. Any longer and a trip to the docs may be in order. |
I have this problem, especially when I'm trying to quit. Keep in mind that overloading on fiber can actually HURT you. This is something I did not know when i was first looking for remedies. Oh and pineapple is your friend. Really. |
