What Are Your Goals for August?
What Are Your Goals for August?
Have always found that having goals helps keep me focused. Wanted to see what goals (aside from staying sober of course) folks had for next month? Mine is to run a 5K in 30 minutes or less. Been training since my first day of recovery 26 days ago and doing surprisingly well!

Most of my goals are fitness oriented as well. Running, lifting, etc.
As well as some music performance goals.
I think you've hit on a really successful way to stay clean & sober - by making goals, and trying to reach the goals, it keeps me from thinking about drinking & using (both of which go totally against the goals).

This is a great thread, it made me realize that I havn't set any goals.
1. Read a self help book (not sure which one).
2. Step up my fitness routine - Pilates 2X a week, Weight training 1X a week and cardio 4X a week.

Interesting topic.
I established my first fitness goals a long time ago when I quit drinking, mostly because the goals could hopefully save my life. I believe the goals did indeed save my life, as the goals gave my life some purpose & direction.
If I had continued on, drinking, lying to myself, not taking my sobriety seriously, not doing everything I possibly could to remain sober, saying I would do everything 'tomorrow', and not changing my ways, I would have DIED.
So, if there is anyone having a problem quitting drinking, and you feel it may be a case of life & death, as it was in my case - take the setting of goals suggestion VERY seriously and it could actually save your life, as it saved mine.
Thanks for allowing me to share.

(^ Good post - keep everybody honest ^ )
Last year my running goal was to run 3 miles every other day by end of the summer. I ended up running 7 miles every other day for over 50 days last fall and into the winter. Mission accomplished.
This year I want to run 4 mile runs as many days a week as I can, concentrating on some 'speed bursts' during the runs, as opposed to last year's every other day runs at a slow-moderate pace.
In June I could not finish a couple of the first 3 mile runs without doing some walking, I was too out of breath. Now near the end of July I'm doing 4 milers about 5 times a week, with 'speed bursts' during the runs. Mission being accomplished.
(NOTE: several years ago (2005 I think?) when I first decided to start running I started out running less than a mile, felt like I was dying, and could hardly walk the next day. It took about a week before I could run again.)
Thanks for asking...!

Thanks! I will appreciate that progress report request in a month.
(With all things being good, hopefully I will be 5 pounds lighter too...!)
Best wishes toward reaching your very reasonable goal.

How about these goals:
Sober, One day at a time
Building a consistent relationship with a Higher Power
Working Steps daily
Making meetings when able
Meeting with Sponsor if able at least once per week
Goals are essential to the newly recovering person; routine, discipline and consistency. I will have nothing, if I do not take care of my sobriety first.

Definitely Tommy! I simply like to reiterate the actions that provided me this wonderful new life. Sharing goals and helping the newcomer is a joy, yet without a consistent plan to change, I would never have had the opportunity to run from anything but the Cops. Have a great weekend!

1) Make 4 years sober on the 8th
2) Join sobergirl in losing a pantsize
3) Decide if I want to re-establish relationship with current (or past cause I really don't know anymore) sponsor or seek out a new one
4) Try to dig out of my financial hole defined as not dipping into overdraft privilege
5) Work on organizing bedroom better
Take care,
Kellye

1. Enjoy the kids' swim team breakfast on my one year anniversary (8/10), in spite of our tablemates, who are known around to be a pair of loud-mouthed alcoholics, and to know what my role will be; to carry the message, to be warned what my life was and still could be, or to simply be among other people regardless of what rumor pegs them as?
2. Try to speak coherently for a whole 5 – 10 minutes at my home group’s anniversary meeting; it’ll be the first time my wife hears me speak at a meeting. I know there’s a message for me to carry, I hope to find it in time (8/27).
3. Enjoy a visit by my father and his wife (8/16). I love my family, but I moved 2/3 the length of the East Coast away 20 years ago for a REASON. And my wife doesn’t appreciate their advice much.
4. Get my car fixed. It’s a ’95 Altima, needs an oil change and one or more engine mounts replaced. These are the gifts of sobriety, that we take can and do care of the little things. Eventually.
5. Start speaking a few evenings a month at the hospital where I detoxed. I know what THAT message will be, that Third Step thing will make it easier.

I would like to be able to start fixing the financial mess I'm in. I would like to be able to be happy with myself. I would also like to stay sober - which so far I'm doing very well at. but I still can't seem to find happiness within myself when everything around me is crashing down around my head.
