Fifth a day. Whiskey.

I regret every moment of it.

Last time I drank, I started the night with 12 beers. Then I drank an entire bottle of sherry, 750 ml, 20% alcohol, or 40 proof. Then I had a pint at one bar, then more at the next. Then at the final bar we had about 10 shots. Little did I know the people I was hanging out with were doing shots of water as I did shots of Jagermeister. They weren't friends, I only met them that night.

That was a typical night out for me. The second I had a buzz on, I had no hope of stopping unless forced.

I've managed to avoid alcohol poisoning because I'm a big guy, with a fairly large amount of muscle mass.

I was a complete mess, and even after only 11 days sober, I'm already enjoying life more and more.

What everyone else said...and to answer your question :

- for a long time one bottle of wine 3 x a week on an empty stomach was more than enough;
- then in the last 2 years it was 2 bottle (on empty stomach) about 3 times a week - not through choice was too sick the following day...
- in the final months...2 bottle of wine on empty stomach - but CRAVING more by midnight and all bars/pubs closed ( i drank at home) and I would force it down when hunogver so I could honestly drink 5 times a week if not 6!

writing that makes me feel sad, horrified and very very grateful for my sobriety - and most of all the removal of the DESIRE to drink and destroy myself - thank you God!!!

Talking

I consider my alcoholism began about 5 years before I tried to quit.

I was a bar drinker...also had frequent blackouts
so it's difficult to surmise how much I was drinking.
And I was working in bars/restaurants ..over tipped
so my drinks were always poured heavy.

I would say a quart a day...
Vodka in warm weather Scotch in cold .

I'd go in a bar as Carol...hair and make up done
smelling and looking fine.

About 5 drinkes ...Barbara would appear.
Loud...make up smeared...hair falling down..
flirting ...dancing ...arguementive.

Around 9 drinks ...Delores popped up.
She sat alone at the end of the bar.
Repeating "I'm sorry" to everyone
weeping ....a sodden drunken mess.

The bar tender called me a cab
I went home ..poured a glass of liquor
got "black cord fever" and called
waking people up ..either alarmng or
disgusting them. with slurred prattle.

While my body did not have damage
my mind and soul were sliding away.

It's been years since I finally quit.
Wisest move I ever made!

WantToNeedTo,

Like others I don't know that the quantity is the determinant, but I do think you are looking to "excuse" the not stopping with a "what's the point" rationale.

If you have damage, then you have damage, but drinking more certainly won't fix anything! I can tell you in MY CASE, the damage was reversed after a few years of not drinking.

I drank in the bars, everyday. Hard booze always, I thought beer was to get rid of cotton mouth in the middle of the night. At the end, last year or so, I drank between 1 and 2 fifths of Canadian Club whiskey per day. I couldn't get enough to make it "work" like it had in the past. I assumed that at 46 years old I was a goner anyway, but I couldn't live my life the way I was so I went to AA and in 1999 I had my last drink, (so far).

I still attend AA and I don't drink, have a great life and my liver, though slightly scarred, is healthy. I even was issued life insurance on a non-rated basis in 2001. The enzymes had returned to a normal level. The enzymes are normal, I am still working on me being normal, but AA is helping!!

Life is much better sober, and everyday is a gift!

Go see a Doctor, they have seen it all. Everyday that I wake up looking at the green side of the grass is a blessing.

Good luck,

Jon
