Scary reality check.

I am not sure if this is fact or not, but in a meeting last night a gentleman shared that he had heard on the news that today one stands a better chance of recovering from cancer then from alcoholism. A higher percentage of alcoholics die from alcoholism then do cancer patients die from cancer!

I know of 3 folks personally that have died from it in the last month, this disease is a killer!

If you are an alcoholic and choose to keep drinking you are going to die!

No it may not be cirrosis of the liver resulting in bleeding from ones ureatha and anus in your final days, you may get lucky and die:

1. From a stroke.
2. A heart attack.
3. An accident.
4. Pancreatic cancer.
5. Kidney failure.

Or maybe you will become a wet brain and be a burden on your family as they change your diapers and spoon feed you as you spend the rest of your days rotting in a bed.

I had to post this up to remind us that personal and financial troubles are not the only reasons to get and stay sober.

Since I began my recovery....
25 alcoholics have died from our disease.

A few had been in the rooms with me
Most were old drinking acquaintances
5 very dear friends..

To the list above ...let me add suicide.

You too can recover
the life you save ...is your own.

It is sad. I work with a lady who's brother committed suicide about a year ago. I was told that he had started drinking again and his life started to fall apart. What bothers me now about it, is that did not raise any red flags for me. I guess we think we can never sink that low. I'll bet those who have died alcoholic deaths thought the same thing a some point. While this is not a happy post it is necessary lest we forget the dangers involved with our previous ways.

There is an even scarier fact that some acoholics, who have stopped drinking commit suicide because their alcoholism has been left untreated (you hear about these people with 20-30 years of 'sobriety' who just can't take life anymore.... )

You take away the medicine (booze) - you better replace it with something and work on removing the root of the problem.

... committed suicide... had started drinking again...
Once more I'm reminded of how alcohol affects the brain and mind, numbing it and effectively shutting down parts of it, especially with use over time.

Do you remember the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"? The part where Dave (astronaut) is pulling components from HAL's (ships' computer) "brain". We do that to ourselves and then we wonder why we can't handle our own emotions, let alone manage our own lives.

Perhaps add homocide and car accidents to the list.

If I could add something to this, I have often read that abuses like Alcohol, Drugs, Obesity, Smokes dont often shorten life a whole lot, but the difference is in the quality of life in the final years.

Abuses, if they dont kill us, can make the end-game pretty crappy.

More cheerie thoughts for you. (Hey, taz started it...lol)

The wife of a close friend of mine in alaon died Dec 06 of wet-brain alcoholism. mental illness got her first, then couldnt swallow, had feeding tube inserted, which she pured alcohol into, then heart attack, then coma for 6 months. lost all her muscle mass, skin hung on her like a drape. When they finally disonnected life support, took 10 hrs for her to pass.

She was 58. She has one been a penthouse pet. I saw her pictorial. She was a beauty...until she wasnt anymore.

THIS DISEASE IS DEADLY.
