Question What causes the physical exhaustion when you stop drinking?

I haven't had a drink in 3 days, and I got decent sleep the past two nights. However, at work around 2pm I feel like I have to go home and take a nap. Last night I went home and napped from 6-8. I then woke up and ate dinner, and went to bed around 11.

What's causing the physical exhaustion? Is it just my body detoxing? When will I stop being so tired?

I had that happen too but I thought it was completely unrelated to alcohol. Hmm...

I found I had a similiar experience in early recovery. This is a web site that explains a lot about post acute withdrawl syndrome which may explain some of what you are feeling. I know the site explained a lot for me.

I've been sleeping up to 12 hours a night when I can, and I asked my Doc about it. He said that my CNS was so depressed for so long I just need the extra rest at this time. I can go to bed on a Friday night at 9PM and sleep until 10 the next morning. The doc said it will level out after a while, so I'm just waiting it out.

How interesting. it was always my understanding that oversleeping is detrimental to your health.

So is drinking 20 beers a night, I've been exhausted lately and I guess I'm just letting my body do what it needs to do. I should have added that my Dr. told me to let him know if my sleep doesn't even out after 4 months, I'm just waiting to see if it gets better.

I have always understood it to be the opposite because our bodies need sleep to repair and heal. So when we don't get enough sleep we don't give our bodies enough time to heal.

I used to hate my bed, it was always spinning around.......LOL

Now I absolutely love my bed, it was crucial to my early recovery, sleep is healing, and my poor body needed to heal.

To help with healing and energy ....

Take a daily multi-vitamin + a B complex

Eat healthy meals more often...smaller portions.
That levels off swings in blood sugar.

Way To Go on your sober time!

I loved the sugar in alcohol. And, whenever I tried stopping drinking, I was always really tired because my body was used to the extra sugar surge. Also, I think that mentally and spiritually, early recovery is hard work and tiring.

Hang in there!

I find that in the early days of sobriety, there is still alcohol in my body & I am so mentally stressed that my sleep is not of the best quality. Same experience..exhausted by mid-day and very lethargic. Not a permanent state (thank God!). Takes me about a week (sometimes longer) until I am physically & mentally able to really rest.

One of the reasons I have read for this is due to the fact that every cell in our bodies get used to getting energy from alcohol which is very easy to break down, our cells actually adjust to using alcohol as the primary source for fuel, when we deny our cells the easy energy they got from alcohol we tire easily.

The longer we stay sober the more our cells adjust back to using other sources of energy then alcohol. I was tired for months after I quit even though I was eating right and taking vitamins, the vitamins are crucial to our recovery though, especially B complex. The energy will return as your body heals, give it time, this to shall pass.
