Is it true???

Hello,
I like to know if it is true if you stop drinking cold turkey you can die???

They told my daughter this and she wants to stop but is afraid of the side effects, but she also realizes drinking is eventually gonna kill her.
Any input is greatly appreciated!!

Medical detox for a heavy drinker is the safest route. Yes, you can die from alcohol withdrawals.

Peace & Love,

Hi and Welcome to SR

We do have a link on de tox/withdrawal
Please click here to read

To answer your question...Yes sometimes
and that is why having a medical supervised de tox is wise.

Good to know your daughter is seeking sobriety.
Blessings to both of you

I had to go through medical detox, I felt it was not needed, but I spent 5 days being pumped full of blood pressure meds to keep me from having a stroke or heart attack, anti-seizure meds to prevent siezures that could have killed me, the blood pressure meds made me nervous enough, but when I started to get the shakes after 3 days even with the anti-siezure meds I was scared.

People die every day from alcohol detoxing, your daughter needs to tell the doctor the entire truth about how much she drinks and how long she has drank. If the doctor says she needs detox medically, then do it! Why die trying to prove a point?

I wish you all the luck in the world verde, check with the salvation army on detox or your local health department. I pray your daughter is the one wanting to quit drinking and not you wanting her to quit. An alcoholic has to really want to quit drinking before they can stop and it has to be for their selfs and not someone else.

verde....
You are most welcomed.

De tox/withdrawal is not the same as a long term rehab.
As Taz mentioned
Some hospitals and the Salvation Army offer
3/4 days for free Calling your local health department
is a good start.

Also...is your daughter attending AA?
AA members have up to date info
on whats around locally.

And your doctor is another good idea.
Be honest and get his opinion.
