Thumbs up Songs that touch your heart

At work last night I was listening to the radio and a song by Pat Green came on the radio. I've heard this song many times before, and even told my wife how much I didn't like his songs before, but last night I was actually touched by it and it felt great. I'm not sure why I was touched, or if it had anything to do with the fact that I had just finished meditating on step 3 and decided to give all I've got to give right now in hopes that this time will be my last time quiting. I had a rough first 2 days, and have had better days the past 3. It feels like something is really working in my life, albeit in waves. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but for now it does feel good. I just hope to be able to do it this time. Thought it might be nice to share the words of the song here. If anyone else has a song that has touched them, I would love to know about it.

Mile upon mile, got no direction.
We're all playin' the same game.
We're all lookin' for redemption.
Just to pray, to say the name.

So caught up now in pretendin'
That what we're seekin' is the truth.
I'm just lookin' for a happy endin'.
All I'm lookin' for is you.

You came upon me, wave on wave.
You're the reason I'm still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
You came upon me, wave on wave.

I wandered out into the water,
An' I thought that I might drown.
I don't know what I was after,
Just know I was goin' down.

And that's when she found me.
Not afraid anymore.
She said: "You know, I always had you, baby.
"Just waitin' for you to find what you were lookin' for."

You came upon me, wave on wave.
You're the reason I'm still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
It came upon me, wave on wave.

Wave on wave.
Wave on wave.

An' it came upon me, wave on wave.
You're the reason I'm still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
It came upon me, wave on wave.

The clouds broke and the angels cried:
"You ain't gotta wipe the floor."
That's why it put me in your hands.
When it came upon me wave on wave.

Yeah, it came upon me, wave on wave.
You're the reason I'm still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
An' it came upon me, wave on wave.

Yeah, it came upon me, wave on wave.
You're the reason I'm still here, yeah.
Am I the one you were sent to save?
An' it came upon me, wave on wave.

BTW no offense to any Pat Green fans. Perhaps I am finally waking up and his music is better than I thought.

Nice lyrics. Not familiar with the song or the singer I must say.

If I were to list all the songs where I felt like you describe (especially after making a decision like you did at step 3!!!)...I don't think the thread would ever end.

But I got my iPod on random today..I am sure one will hit me like you describe.

Will post when it does

Quicker than slower

Well..it didn't take long.

One Step Closer - U2
"I’m ‘round the corner from anything that’s real
I’m across the road from hope
I’m under a bridge in a rip tide
That’s taken everything I call my own

One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing

I’m on an island at a busy intersection
I can’t go forward, I can’t turn back
Can’t see the future
It’s getting away from me
I just watch the tail lights glowing

One step closer to knowing
Knowing, knowing

I’m hanging out to dry
With my old clothes
Finger still red with the pr1ck of an old rose
Well the heart that hurts
Is a heart that beats
Can you hear the drummer slowing?

One step closer to knowing
To knowing, to knowing, to knowing "

Interesting side note to the song (back meaning) Bono (U2) says" I was talking to Noel Gallagher about my dad, who lost his faith toward the end of his life. And Noel asked, ‘Does he believe in God?’ And I said, ‘I don’t think he knows.’ So Noel went, ‘Well, he’s one step closer to knowing now.’ And I thought, ‘I’m going to write that song…’ "

(Noel Gallagher is of the rock band Oasis..)

enjoy

Great song, like you there are a lot of songs that I used to not like that as I became more spiritual I was able to hear and understand what a song or a poem was saying that I was unable to hear when I had turned my back on my spitiuality.

You said:
I'm not sure why I was touched, or if it had anything to do with the fact that I had just finished meditating on step 3 and decided to give all I've got to give right now in hopes that this time will be my last time quiting.
Are you working the steps with a sponsor? If you are then he will be doing the following soon:

Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step of which is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never attempted. Though our decision was vital and crucial step, it could have little permanent effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the things in ourselves which had been blocking us. Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions.
As stated in the BB "we launched out on a course of vigorous action", this is right after we have done step 3, you are on a roll, do not let any moss grow, the time is ripe to move forward. I am thankful my sponsor pointed that out to me, because steps 4 & 5 were the most freeing steps I took, all of them together equal sobriety and life for me.

Here are a couple of late Johnny Cash tunes that always send shivers up my spine

Song: Hurt

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Johnny Cash God's Gonna Cut You Down Lyrics

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head's been wet with the midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee talkin' to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel's feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, "John go do My will!"

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down

Off to bed on that note.....sober and thankful

I don't consider myself a religious person, but this song always gets to me. It's an old cowboy song by Marty Robbins, I believe he wrote it in the '50's - the lyrics are great but with the music it's just haunting.

Marty Robbins - The Master's Call

When I was but a young man I was wild and full of fire,
A youth within my teens but full of challenge and desire.
I ran away from home and left my mother and my dad,
I know it grieved them so to think their only boy was bad.

I fell in with an outlaw band, their names were known quite well,
How many times we robbed and plundered, I could never tell.
This kind of sinful livin' leads only to a fall,
I learned that much and more the night I heard my master call.

One night we rustled cattle, a thousand head or so,
And started them out on the trail that leads to Mexico.
But a norhtern started blowin' and lightnin' flashed about,
I thought someone was calling me I thought I heard a shout.

Then at that moment lightning struck not twenty yards from me,
And left there was a giant cross where once there was a tree.
And this time I knew a heard a voice, a voice so sweet and strange,
A voice that came from everywhere, a voice that called my name.

So frightened I was thinking of sinful deeds I'd done,
I failed to see a thousand head of cattle start to run.
The cattle they stampeded, were running all around,
My pony ran but stumbled, and it threw me to the ground.

I felt the end was nearing, that death would be the price,
When a mighty bolt of lightning showed the face of Jesus Christ.
And I cried "Oh Lord, forgive me. Don't let it happen now,
I want to live for You alone, oh God these words I vow."

My wicked past unfolded, I thought of wasted years,
When another bolt of lightning killed a hundred head of steers.
And the others rushed on by me, and I was left to live
The Master had a reason, life is His to take and give.

A miracle performed that night, I wasn't ment to die
The dead ones formed a barricade least 6 or 7 high
Right behind it, there was I, afraid but safe and sound
I cried and begged for mercy kneeling there upon the ground

A pardon I was granted, my sinful soul set free,
No more to fear the angry waves upon life's stormy sea.
Forgiven by the love of God, a love that will remain,
I gave my life and soul the night the Saviour called my name.

That song is actually a cover by Johnny Cash(this is gonna become a music thread before we know it) of the original Nine Inch Nails song - try finding the live version of it, with the video (youtube or something). It's amazing.

Yes, I've got both versions on my computer MP3s. There is so much hurt you can feel in Johnny's voice just gets to me. He also did a cover of U2s One and Solitary Man by Neil Diamond around the same time. Two of my favorite versions of those songs, but not near as powerful.

A couple more...the first I could relate to last week although my situation doesn't feel near as comical as it may seem by the lyrics.....the latter I can relate to this week, and hopefully many more. I hope to make a CD with all the songs posted here to listen to in the car or anywhere when I need some inspiration to keep going with sobriety and may not be able to get to a meeting right then. So if you have something, please post it. Thanks to all those who have posted so far.

Blake Shelton The More I Drink

He was sittin’ at the bar, sippin’ on a regular Coke
We were drinkin’ and smokin’ and makin’ him the butt of our jokes
We all said, “Man, what happened to you? Why can’t you just have a few?”
He said, “I would if I could, but it’s probably best that I don’t.”

Cause the more I drink, the more I drink
Yeah, I’m the world’s greatest lover and a dancin’ machine
I get loud, I get proud....and it gets worse
Well if I have one, I’ll have thirteen
Naw, there ain’t no in-between
Cause, the more I drink, the more I drink.

A couple of cold ones, and somebody hands me a shot.
Hell, even buck-tooth and bow-legged women start lookin’ hot
And pretty soon I’m bummin’ cigarettes and sweet talkin’ some big brunette
Yeah, once I get on a roll, ain’t no tellin’ where I’ll stop

Yep-yep
Humm, that’s what I’m talking about

Man, if I have one, I’ll have thirteen
And they can’t get me off the kareoke machine,
The more I drink...the more I drink.
Yeah, the more I drink, the more I drink, the more I drink.

Allman Brothers Soulshine

When you cant find the light,
That got you through the cloudy days,
When the stars aint shinin bright,
You feel like youve lost youre way,
When those candle lights of home,
Burn so very far away,
Well you got to let your soul shine,
Just like my daddy used to say.

He used to say soulshine,
Its better than sunshine,
Its better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Hey now people dont mind,
We all get this way sometime,
Got to let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

I grew up thinkin that I had it made,
Gonna make it on my own.
Life can take the strongest man,
Make him feel so alone.
Now and then I feel a cold wind,
Blowin through my achin bones,
I think back to what my daddy said,
He said boy, in the darkness before the dawn:

Let your soul shine,
Its better than sunshine,
Its better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Yeah now people dont mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Sometimes a man can feel this emptiness,
Like a woman has robbed him of his very soul.
A woman too, God knows, she can feel like this.
And when your world seems cold, you got to let your spirit take control.

Let your soul shine,
Its better than sunshine,
Its better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Lord now people dont mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Oh, its better than sunshine,
Its better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Yeah now people dont mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

Alicia Keys - No One

I just want you close
Where you can stay forever
You can be sure
That it will only get better
You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry cause
Every things gonna be alright
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is every thing's gonna be alright

No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
You you
Can get in the way of what I feel for you

When the rain is pouring down
And my heart is hurting
You will always be around
This I know for certain

You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry cause
Every thing's gonna be alright
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is every thing's gonna be alright

No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
You you
Can get in the way of what I feel for you

I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have
I know people will try
Try to divide
Something so real
So till the end of time
Im telling you that

No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I'm feeling
No one no one no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
Oh oh oh....

Some People Change - by Montgomery Gentry

His old man was a rebel yeller:
Bad boy to the bone.
He'd say: "Can't trust that other fella,"
He'd judge 'em by the tone of their skin.
He was raised to think like his Dad:
Narrow mind full of hate.
On the road to no-where fast,
Till the Grace of God got in the way.
Then he saw the Light an' hit his knees an' cried an' said a prayer:
Rose up a brand new man; left the old one right there.

Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave.
Don't give up hope: some people change.
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way: some people change.

She was born with her mother's habit:
You could say: "It's in her blood."
She hates that she's gotta have it:
As she fills her glass up.
An she'd love to kill that bottle,
But all she can think about,
Is a, a better life, a second chance,
An' everyone she's letting down.
She throws that bottle down.

Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave.
Don't give up hope: some people change.
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way: some people change.

Thank God for those who make it:
Let them be the Light.

(Let them be the light)
(Some people change.)
Here's to the strong; thanks to the brave.
Don't give up hope: some people change.
Against all odds, against the grain,
Love finds a way: some people change.
Some people change.

(Some people change)

I'm not gonna lookup all the stuff on it because apparently, I'm the last person on the planet to hear this song for the first time - "Jesus Take The Wheel" ...
I don't even know who sings it.

I heard it a week ago and it blew me away.

y'all (in my defense here) have to remember that I've been in a bar for the last six years - no radio - just juke box. It's a whole new WORLD of media out here... and it's gonna take me more than a year to get acaught up!

Hi Barb - the song is by Carrie Underwood.

Jesus Take The Wheel

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
she was going way too fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on

Oh, Jesus take the wheel
Oh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Oh, take it, take it from me
Oh, why, oh

Yep. That's the one I'm relaating to here lately.

It's news to me. Thanks - I didn't know who sang it.

I'm not a religious man particularly but this always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up -

Van Morrison - Full Force Gale

Like a full force gale
I was lifted up again
I was lifted up again by the Lord

And no matter where I roam
I will find my way back home
I will always return to the Lord

In the gentle evening breeze
By the whispering shady trees
I will find my sanctuary in the Lord

I was headed for a fall
The I looked up and saw the writing on the wall

Like a full force gale
I was lifted up again
I was lifted up again by the Lord

I was headed for a fall
The I looked up and saw the writing on the wall

In the gentle evening breeze
By the whispering shady trees
I will find my sanctuary in the Lord

And no matter where I roam
I will find my way back home
I will always return to the Lord

Like a full force gale
I was lifted up again

It's a Great Day to be Alive by Travis Tritt (written by Darrell Scott)

I got rice cooking in the microwave
Got a three day beard I don't plan to shave
And it's a goofy thing but I just gotta say
Hey I'm doing alright

Yeah I think I'll make me some homemade soup
Feelin pretty good and that's the truth
It's neither drink nor drug induced
No I'm just doin alright

And it's a great day to be alive
I know the sun's still shinin when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can't every day be just this good?

It's been fifteen years since I left home
Said good luck to every seed I'd sown
Give it my best and then I left it alone
Oh...I hope their doin alright

Now I look in the mirror and what do I see?
A lone wolf there starin back at me
Long in the tooth but harmless as can be
Lord I guess he's doin alright

And it's a great day to be alive
I know the sun's still shinin when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can't every day be just this good?

Sometimes it's lonely
Sometimes it's only me
And the shadows that fill this room
Sometimes I'm fallin
Desperately callin
Howlin at the moon...
Ahwoo!
Ahwoo!

Well I might go get me a new tattoo
Or take my old Harley for a three day cruise
Might even grow me a Fu Man Chu...
Oh Aww!

And it's a great day to be alive
I know the sun's still shinin when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can't every day be just this good?

And it's a great day to be alive
I know the sun's still shinin when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can't every day be just this good?

More than a Love Song by Fireflight:

"Look into her eyes
You can see she's crying out
She hides behind her smile
You can see the pain of doubt
And if you would hold her close
You could feel the brokenness inside
You would know she feels alone
She feels empty

She needs more than a hug on a holiday
She needs more than a smile on a Sunday
She's not looking for you to fix what's wrong
She really wants to know
Really wants to know she belongs
She needs more than a love song

Listen to her now
Broken is a beautiful sound
She's a little scared
She's afraid of falling further down
But maybe if you let her know
And gave her just a little hope
Somehow if she knew the truth
She'd come alive

She needs more than a hug on a holiday
She needs more than a smile on a Sunday
She's not looking for you to fix what's wrong
She really wants to know
Really wants to know she belongs
She needs more than a love song

In the end
We will learn
Actions speak louder then our words

She needs more than a hug on a holiday
She needs more than a smile on a Sunday
She's not looking for you to fix what's wrong
She really wants to know
Really wants to know she belongs
She needs more than a love song."

I just totally relate to this song.

Eagles - You Are Not Alone

Say goodbye to all your pain and sorrow
Say goodbye to all those lonely nights
Say goodbye to all your blue tomorrows
Now you're standing in the light

I know sometimes you feel so helpless
Sometimes you feel like you can't win
Sometimes you feel so isolated
You'll never have to feel that way again

You are not alone
You're not alone

Never thought I'd find the road to freedom
Never thought I'd see you smile again
Never thought I'd have the chance to tell you
That I will always be your friend

You are not alone
You're not alone
