Tomorrow

Hi everyone! I'm just hoping for some support for tomorrow.

It's our yearly family reunion. Everyone of my cousins drinks, and drinks a whole bunch. I'll be going with my kids. I know that I can make it through the day, but I just don't even want to go. I'll probably end up leaving early.

So, if you guys can just send me some energy to make it through the shindig, I'd appreciate it!

Karen

Hi merlotmamma!

Is there anyone you could go with (or hang out with) that doesn't drink? Even if you have to play the the kiddies most of time.

Hope things go well for you. Family is nice, but can also be the absolute biggest stress! Keep your head about you and you'll be just fine.

Best wishes

BHJ

Hi Karen,

Any chance you can rush out and pick up a copy of the book Living Sober? There's some excellent suggestions in it for for, well, "living sober" in situations exactly like these.

And remember, it's OK to just say no;-)

Hey Karen !

I just did the semi0annual beach party with Family and Friends. Traditionally a big drink fest, and this year was no exception. I had fun, laughed, & talked about old times. Only ting was I didn't drink. It's not that hard, you'll make it.

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR i havent had a
drink of alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and u i am truely grateful.

Im not familiar with ur story or ur
sobriety date.

For me in early recovery I heard
lots of good suggestions from those
before me.....if they suggested that
I needed to change people places
and things that would be unhealthy
for my sobriety then i had to adhere
to what they said....

In early recovery,,,i was already
squirrely...even tho i spent 28 days
in rehab and another 6 weeks in an
intensive outpatiant aftercare
program...i was still on a major roller-
coaster ride of emotions....

For me...i felt uncomfortable around
others that drank....and if i had to
be around family that did that...i
had to have a plan in place....

See hanging around folks that drank
and i didnt ....well i couldnt very well
talk to them because they we under
the influence and not rational...

I mean i know how a drink makes me
feel and if i cant be one with them
drinking and carrying on....then
id feel like an outsider...

So i was told...if i HAd to go....bring
my own self in the car so that i could
have an escape.....if i needed to pop
in quickly to make an appearance then
i could have a good excuse to leave....

That way u r not stranded and u r taking
care of whats more important....YOUR
RECOVERY.

Today i still dont put myself in arkward
situations that would make me feel un-
comfortable.....I just cant because
my sobriety is more important than
anything....i mean...if i dont have that
then i dont or wont have anything else...

Thanks for letting me share.

Thanks everyone! I know that I will make it through the day without drinking. I just don't want to go AT ALL. Sorta have too..too many older relatives from far away coming and you never know when you'll see them again.

Looks like I might be playing softball with the kids this year!

Sharon,

I've read your posts and they are always an inspiration! I'm coming up on 4 months sober :-)

Oops. That "Vobes" was supposed to be "vibes". I don't see any way to edit the previous post.

Hi MM....sending positive thoughts your way! i just had a four day wedding/family reunion last month, and it really wasn't so bad being the only sober one there...I watched people as they drank more and more, and saw the effects on them...they got louder, and more obnoxious....i did get a few negative comments and nosey questions about my new found abstinence....but i woke up every morning feeling great...while they all woke up feeling lousey and hungover....It will be good for you to be an,"observer" to the craziness alchohol brings out in people...just stay strong and stick to your guns.......good luck......Play ball!

I would not go if I was you. There is much more there than picking up a drink that could harm you.
I would meet the older relatives after the reunion on their own.
Hope you have a good day either way.
