How risky to stop?

Sorry if this topic has been exhausted somewhere here. But, I'm considering quitting and don't want to die in the process. I have been drinking the equivalent of about 10 oz. of alcohol each evening for many, many years. I understand CT can cause problems depending on quantity and duration. I just can't take the down time required for a supervised approach right now. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to talk to your dr about this. Withdrawl from alcohol can be very dangerous.

I wish you well!

There is some risk involved in alcohol detoxing but don't let that discourage you from getting the help you need. You stand a very good chance of a successful detox if you listen to your doctor and take the necessary precautions.

CT = ????

I have never heard of that term.

10oz of alcohol? Less that 1 beer? Or were you drinking 10 oz of everclear 190 proof grain alcohol?

At any rate get medical care when you detox. This may or may not mean that you miss work. Please let us know how you are doing.

not a doctor on duty.

Hi....I too did a CT ...cold turkey.... with a friend
who had been to a medically supervised de tox.

I strongly sugest you read the 2 top sticky post here
and yes...my story is there too...

You may be thinking detox/withdrawing is a long deal.
It usually is 3 days...and you can go to an ER if necessary.

It is always wise to speak with your doctor
as there ae many variables to each person.

Be safe...Sobriety Rocks!...

Hi Walk,

Are you talking just alcohol, or are you taking medications also? This can make a big difference.

I've done CT many many times, when I was still able to that is. Man was it hell.

At the end of my drinking I required medical assistance.

I highly reccommend speaking with your doctor. If you are very serious and can follow directions and not drink, there is medication that can keep you pretty safe and ease the process.

I suggest you talk to your DR. they know what to do.

Ted

I went cold turkey to with minimal physical discomfort. What I wasn't prepared for was the emotional discomfort I experienced and would consult with a doctor if ever a next time presents itself. Your doctor can best prepare you for what to expect and if need be provide you with limited medication in the event you experience the physical withdrawals. Good luck to you I think you want this for yourself.

OK, saw my PC physician this morning. Discussed my situation with him. Got a prescription for about three medications that I can't read. So, here we go. Honestly, the last time (day) I can for sure say that I didn't drink was in 1981.

Good luck, beleive it or not but no matter how painful or not it is quitting you are doing the easiest part.

The initial stopping is the easy part and many people do it by thier selfs with & without meds and a doctors support.

Next comes the hardest part of all, staying stopped!!!!

There are a lot of ways to stay stopped:

1. You can "White knuckle" it all by your self with no changes in any thing except not drinking. I tried this numerous times over the years, I was a miserable, irratable SOB and always went back to drinking because I was going to either go crazy or kill some one.

2. You can use one or several different support systems that revolve around recovery, but if you change nothing except not drinking... well I would have a look at #1 for possible results.

3. You can work one or several different recovery programs. If you work, and I do mean WORK a recovery program and you do change things about yourself you are going to at a minimum stand a chance of staying sober. However no recovery program will work if you do not work it!

4. You can work one or several different recovery programs that provide face to face support, this will dramticallly increase your chance of staying sober. However no recovery program will work if you do not work it!

Hi Walk,

Glad you are giving up booze.

I second what Taz said and for me AA works. If you have problems stopping or staying stopped, they are only a phone call away, and it's free!

Best to you,

Ted
