Try getting a Higher power and you might stay sober.

I can just see you two, Slowbriety and DK, strolling around the Big Blue W asking clerks to point you to the Higher Power and then finding some sort of epiphany while standing in front of the drills and skill saws...

T'would be serendipitous ... or perhaps just seren - dippity.

Then... as if the poor clerks weren't confused enough, I had to ask if they carry a secular alternative...

Insanity- doing the samething over and over again, expecting different results.

might wanna try NOT asking for a secular alternative.

I can't fake believing in something I don't believe in, and that includes theistic deities, or a personal god.

I didnt believe in a higher power either when i first started out. But through the steps i found a God of my understanding. A God that has nothing to do with religion or the church. IF one is only being able to stay sober for a week or ten days that is an obvious sign of powerlessness. Like i have said many times, it boils down to how bad does one want to get and stay sober. hope whatever avenue you choose works out for you. But like i did, looking at my past "track record" was a great start of what NOT to do.

I didn't say anything about religion or church...

I've seen enough examples to know that sobriety can be just as successful when approached in a secular way.

Happy Birthday Paul! (belatedly)

Umm... If one has no belief in an HP, no need to create one for the purpose of recovery. Would that not be dishonest?

DK keep on trying. You can do it, and it's all worth it.

Hi guys,

It was too late to edit my post on "The God thing" and I feel really bad that I may have left doorknob out, espicially seeing that it is (or recently was) his birthday so I will correct the error here.

I KNOW that there is a higher power, call it the Great Spirit. Call it God. Call it Jesus. Call it the Holy Spirit. Call it Yahweh. Call it Allah. Call it the TAO. Call it the Holy Doorknob of Antioch. Call it the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Call it the collective spirit of Alcoholics Anonymous.

I don’t care what you call it, just CALL IT!

It will answer.

Seek and ye shall find.

Ted

(P.S. I do have a somewhat slightly warped sense of humor)

Ron,

Thanks for being one of those examples of secular recovery. There's not many left here...

Everyone,

Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes. It's nice to know people are thinking of you.

DK

My ability or inability to stay sober has nothing to do with my religious/spiritual beliefs or lack thereof. I'm sure I need to change the way I deal with stress, emotions, and frustration, get some help for my mental illness, and maybe even force myself to go to some f2f meetings, but I don't need a religious/spiritual conversion.

well, like i said before, i hope whatever avenue you choose works out. I just know for me, if i am powerless over alcohol, which means it will beat me everytime, then, i do not have the ability to keep myself sober. Hence the higher power. what i dont understand, if you see that it has worked for others, why not think it will work for you? when i first came into recovery i DID NOT believe in any higher power, i soon found out that, yes he is there, and yes, he does have my best interests at heart. God (for lack of a better word) does not play favorites. What would it hurt to atleast try it? But anyways, hope the best for you, and keep on keeping on.
