NA Beer

Just curious... do any of you drink NA beer...

is it ok in your opinion for an alcoholic to drink non-alcoholic beer?

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago that you might want to search out.

For me, it's just a slow method of going back to the real thing. Why tempt myself like that? Besides, there's still a small percentage of alcohol in NA beer and wine.

Sounds like denial in a can to me. Just my $.02 worth.

I love this topic, 'cos I get to say this:

For an alcoholic, drinking "non"-alcoholic beer is like shooting yerself in the head with a small-caliber handgun.

It'll only kill you a little.

The alcoholic brain doesn't seem to know the difference between a little and a lot of alcohol (and there is some alcohol in near-beer). It just knows there's alcohol present, and it wants more... and more... and more... Chemicals respond to chemicals; it's the way things work.

If one's drug-of-choice were heroin, would it be a good idea to shoot even a highly-diluted syringeful into one's vein? Prob'ly not...

Good question, Debaucher. It comes up a lot.

I have a buddy who has been sober (alcohol) for a year plus now... he still partakes in a wacky tabacky on occasion... so I don't know if he is a reliable source...

but I know he drinks NA beer... and as far as I know hasn't gone back to drinking... real beer... which is all he drank... he didn't drink the hard stuff.

one other thread was

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...ghlight=odouls

I guess the question for me really comes down to if I am substituting NA beer for real beer... or not... am I mentally teasing myself... am I reinforcing old habbits... or not... tough one...

I really like St. Pauli NA... Given the choice of it... or just about any other beverage... I would choose it...

On the other hand... the same could be true of beer in general for me...

If I felt like diet pepsi... but all they had was diet Tab... I would say... ok I'll take a water... BUT if I asked for but light and all they had was Old Milwalke Light... Or PBR Light... I would say... sure lol...

I get everyones point in those threads... perhaps I should look at it as ok on occasion but I shouldn't let it become a habbit... and if it becomes a craving... I should just cut it out...

oh.. well.. in 28 days... I have had two 12 packs... and on monday nights... I have had a couple Kalibers (like guiness NA... ) what at darts...

hmmm... alright... I got a lot of good stuff to noodle on...

To thine own self be true... I guess...

I'm glad someone else was wondering about this. It's been causing me a bit of a headache. Could it be that a dry drunk would drink NA beer/wine but a person in recovery would understand why to avoid it?

Anyone who drinks alcohol is not sober.

Please tell me how that is possible?

He may not be drunk but he is not sober.

Gee, let's see...

It tastes like an inferior brand of beer...
You get all the bloating of the real thing…
You pee like a pregnant race horse…
AND NO BUZZ!!!
What’s not to like?

And if that wasn’t enough to make me say UCK!, I really don’t think it would be worth running the risk that it could trigger something that would get me to wanting to revisit the “bad” ol’ days. But heck, that’s just this alkie’s opinion.

Orange juice has about the same alcohol content as near beer, which contains no more than .5% (one half part per 100).

Nyquil is 25% alcohol (25 parts per 100 or 50 Proof).

No offense, but there's a little bit of denial going on there too IMO. Clean and sober go hand-in-hand. I choose to be both, not one or the other.

N/A or OJ.

I do not drink OJ either
cause it makes me think of Screwdrivers

One more comment and I'll step down from the podium.

A member of my AA group recently decided to change his sobriety date. Back in the late 90's he ate a funny brownie, and he's been wondering ever since then if that was a relapse or not.

I thought that was a pretty good example of "rigorous honesty".

I forgot to add something and then I'll step down as well...

If you are a member of a 12-Step Recovery program, run this by a sponsor or someone who has some time behind them that you've seen "walk what they talk." It's easy for me to give you an opinion, but you don't know me or any of us from Adam's Uncle. Before I act on anything someone has told me I go to a known reliable source. And if you can't do that, use common sense... The reason I say that is because I know personally a person who was getting drunk on mouthwash, 'cause that's all they had, but it did the job they wanted done. (They also got sick as a dog after days of that stuff so I don't suggest you try it...) If you want to “get off” you’ll find something to do it with. I've been told there is enough alcohol in Non-Alcoholic Beer to affect a person. I don't know if that's true because it's never been that important to me to find out. I'm sure there is a "Professional" scientific organization out there that has all the stats if you want to look. Oh, and if anyone is interested, I think I have some orange juice in the back of the fridge that has a higher proof than NyQuil… but I wouldn’t suggest that you drink it either.
