worried about my blood pressure
My blood pressure was normal 2 years ago before I re started smoking and drinking a bottle of wine a day... I quit smoking 6 weeks ago and quit drinking 15 days ago. One would think that their b/p would drop somewhat by now.. I am concerned. I have been to the dr. and he said to monitor it over 24 hrs by borowwing a special monitor at a drug store. They are reserved right now. I just had a reading at a Safeway store. of 166/99...freaked me out.!!
Anyone have some advice on how long it takes to see a drop after you quit drinking? I am 20 lbs over weight as well right now.. fedup

Sorry...I disagree.
You are going to worry/stress
about this
and that raises your BP even more.
It's Friday night.
I would not wait to see your doctor.
Go to an ER.

Funny thing that BP, I was concered about mine ... when I initially began quitting drinking it had been 205/145. I learned somethings. Alcohol DOES cause high BP. Second if you have BP that high, they send you to ER and scan your organs to see if anything is rupturing. Third, BP does come back down, but initially you may need some medications.
Finally, my BP was still appearing high, though I felt much different. Doc suggested that I get a home monitor and monitor it at home for a month, checking it daily. Turns out part of the reason my BP was so high for so long after was that I get stressed by doctors and my BP shoots up. Taken at home when my BP was just 160/100 a few hours before it was like 128/75... much better... only difference, no doctor. Doctor actually told me this is more common than most think.
Reasons: people are stressed by doctors; second, you are moving about in yoru day when you go to the doctor and your BP is not actually at the resting rate, which is what the Doctors are more concerned with.
Hope this helps.
Peace, Levi
PS Despite my VERY high BP, no problems after the fact. I was LUCKY.

hi -
I hope you acted on Carol's advice.
I had a customer who, after quitting drinking and smoking at the same time, started 'spiking' (-sp?) spike-ing BP and had to be hospitalized with IV's to stabilize it.
not something to fool around with.
be well!
