Talking Holiday Party Tips

Going to a party?

Here are some ideas that kept me sober during social events...

Go late Leave early Take your own car.

Take a non drinking friend with you.

Carry your AA phone contacts to use if you get antsy.

Dance a lot.

Get your own drink and keep it with you.
A 7 up + Line looks alcoholic.

Smell before you drink...glasses do get switched.

When asked if you want a drink...
"No... this is fine..thanks"

No explanation are needed.
Sober people seldom push
Drunks won't remember or care

Enjoy!

Might I add the following lines if someone offers you a drink:

No thanks. I have something I'd like to do for Christmas next year.

Sounds great. Just have the police here before I start. You'll need them;-)

Thanks, Carol. Good ideas.

BTW, where is the "thank you" icon to click?

When we had a recent system upgrade we lost some
posting functions.
Hopefully...we can install them again soon.

I miss the smilies the most!

great post Carol. Really liked the additions Astro... do you actually say those?

For me it would be "Sure, but you'll need more booze". Or, no thanks, I drank last year. Or, No thanks I don't feel like it. Or, all time favorite, "No thanks, I prefer to watch others drink and get crazy."

Peace, Levi

A friend of mine used the line about the police with a waitress. She kinda freaked out on that one;-)

That made me laugh, only because I understood every word of where it comes from, thanks Carol.

Happy Holidays.

Thumbs up

New Years Eve plans?

My AA home group is getting together for a party
ending with a candle light meeting.

Gratitude will be the Topic.

Carol we have a Alcothon every year in Fredericksburg, it starts on the 23rd of Dec. and runs through the 26th, food and drink (No booze) 24X7, we have at least one speaker a day every day and impromptu meetings 24X7. It was fantastic this year, a great place for those with no real family to go or for someone who needs to get away from family when needed due to issues.

We do not do a News Years deal because Fredericksburg has a big New Years bash that is alcohol free.

Things like the AA Alcathon are what really makes a difference for alcoholics who want to have a good time, meet friends and make friends in a non-drinking atmosphere. We learn how much more real fun we can have with out drinking!

Cranberry and Soda is the drink here...and the reminder that most of the people won't remember or care whether or not I'm drinking. We've also found that going with a purpose helps. We don't go to parties to simply 'hang out'. We go to say hello to the people we wanted to see, chat for a while, and then leave ...which most people don't remember anyway!

When offered a drink I like to say..."No thanks, I've had enough".

A funny one I've heard before is "No thanks, I'm allergic...I break out in handcuffs".

I like that one Mike, another one I have heard is "Only if you have 911 programed into your speed dial!".

Parties?
What works best for me is to make sure there are people with me who know that I don't drink, preferably the host if possible. Accountability is what its about. I alone am powerless.
