Talking Curious......

Most of us know how important it is for people to
eat sensibly and that's especially true for we
alcoholics as we try to heal.

I just heard that the 3 items most sold in supermarkets are
  1. Soda 2. Milk 3, Cereal

With that in mind. I wondered what you buy each week?

Always for me...Fruit...Yogurt...Diet Cola

Anyone else care to share?

The 3 staples in my diet these days are leafy greens, water, and whole grains. Okay, I'll be honest, there are 5 staples in my diet: ice cream and espresso are food groups, right???

I buy my Diet Dr. Pepper every week. I also almost always buy milk. Other than that, it depends. I guess I should say I rarely get out of the store without some kind of ice cream, too.

Lots of fruits & veggies for us, along with cheeses and meats.

If I didn't wreak it with drink from time to time, I would probably be the healthist man around.

I hardly ever buy soda. I do buy juice though. Milk. Whole Grain Bread. Cheese. Lots of fruit and veggies. Like Steve58, I feel that I eat in a very healthy manner. In spite of that, I understand that your cells don't absorb all of the good things if you're actively drinking. I'm not sure if that means that once yous top, things are absorbed again, or if there is a time period of healing first.

Hi CarolD -

It'd been over 6 months since I'd bought food, so my first trip was .... everything! I didn't even have salt.

In the month, the only thing I've regularly run out of is
1- milk
2- eggs
3- salsa

and of course - toilet paper.
lol

grocery shopping has really flip-flopped for me in the past 9 months or so since i stopped drinking... i went from NEVER, EVER wanting anything sugary or sweet... to absolutely CRAVING sugar.. i have horrible sugar binges (surprise, i have an addictive personality and can't do anything that feels "good" in moderation, ugh)..

to some things i always buy@ the store:

baby carrots

coffee beans

no sugar added vanilla frozen yogurt

whole grain rice cakes

yogurt (dannon light & fit)

strawberries, pears, & apples

tunafish

sugar free jello and sugar free whipped cream - i can eat a crapload of this stuff and still only be consuming < 100 calories while getting my extreme "sugar" fix

Club Soda (probably 15 one liter bottles a week - my anti drinking drink), jalapenos, fresh vegetables. My freezer(s) have an elk, a buffalo, 1.5 hogs and a beef in them - don't buy meat, obviously. LOTS of spicy stuff!

It is serious meat, isn't it? Have two huge freezers, plus one in the kitchen fridge and one in our truck shop fridge. We live in the mountains at 8500 feet. My husband's an avid hunter, thus the elk. A friend sold us several head of buffalo at a great priceand keeps them at his ranch - will kill one a year, thus the buffalo. Our grandson raised 2 hogs and a steer for the FFA fair this year (he's 9) so, of course, grandpa had to buy part of the steer and most of the hogs. Thus - we sure do have a lot of meat. Actually had to go buy an extra freezer!

I am addicted to "sparkly water" since I quit drinking, so I buy that every week. I hate milk, but like yogurt, so that's a weekly thing, plus eggplant is a weekly thing. I've been doing a lot of mediteranean cooking and eggplant lends itself well to that style of cooking.

Milk (it used to be "good for you")

bread (that used to be good for us, too!! I'm working on buying actual wheat bread, not just white bread colored brown)

chocolate (now THAT will never go out of style, in my book...I have changed from chocolate plus nougat, caramel, peanuts, etc. to just plain, old milk chocolate...that counts for a healthy diet change, right? right?)

yoghurt - to put on my breakfast cereal, to scoop out of the carton
fruit - apples, oranges, plums. Hate bananas though
tins of tuna - when I've been drinking, there were times I'd scoop that straight out of the tin too
