first week over
Hi everyone, just signed up!
Im 26 single mum in the UK. Ive been punishing myself and those around me with drink for 10 years or so.
well through some serious thinking and encouragment i went to my first AA meeting last tuesday. I had my last drink a week ago today. Being somewhat skeptical i almost didnt go but i was wonderfully amazed at how warmly welcomed and at ease i felt. The lack of judgement and understanding lifted a weight from me alone.
I am going to my second meeting tomorow and have also joined an email support group. I fear i could not do it without the support so it is such a godsend to have found others.
I am now hoping to find a sponsor.can anyone tell me if it is necasary for a sponsor to be in the AA group you attend?
thankyou for listening, HUGS TO ALL

Hi sweetz.Welcome to the forum.
I too found much warmth and acceptance in AA and even after five years AA is still a very loved and joyful area of my life.
We need all the support we can get when we are trying to stay sober and getting a sponsor is usually a good idea.
However, good sponsors are sometimes hard to find and should be chosen with care.Look for someone with some amount of clean time, who is working the 12 steps and seems to be enjoying their recovery.
To me it would be nice if you could find someone from your home group to sponsor you, however if you cannot, then I dont see anything wrong with having a sponsor from another AA group.
Early days in recovery are usually a very crucial time for newcomers. It is important to make 90 meetings in 90 days and to avoid people places and things usually associated with your drinking.
Even if you do not find someone you would like to sponsor you, keep going to meetings and stay commited to your recovery. In time your Higher Power will put someone in your life.
Oh and.....CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ONE WEEK !!!!!!!!!
Peter.

Hello Ariel and welcome to the forum.Congratulations on your two days.
One day at a time is how we stay sober and also by helping to encourage and support each other.
Keep coming back.
