Hi there - I assume you are working with a sponsor? What do they say?
The BB has the simple instructions - see p 64-65 in the chapter How It Works.
I need a little more structure to get started and I found worksheets online. Google step 4 inventory.
Learning and beginning to understand the first 164 p of the BB were the key to me starting what has been the best journey of my life.

I took my fourth on a Saturday with my sponsor. I did not understand the meanings of words well enough to do it on my own. We had a lot of discussion and the explanations my sponsor was able to give as we went through it were invaluable. I still have that step. It contains nothing that would embarrass me or hurt anyone else. It looks like it was written bu a child, which would be quite close to the truth. I am amazed at how accurate it was.
The next day, I took step five, the following weekend steps six and seven, then we began work on making amends.

I used a old 1939 dictionary to look up those word meanings so I could try to have a better understanding and comprehension
I still have it and use it today.
I have done many inventories , many different ways.I benefitted from every one

MDF, in the header part of this forum are step sub-forums...you will find lots of experiences laid out in the step 4 one.
i did mine by the directions laid out in the BB, though was a bit more verbose than the chart presented there in my columns.

do all 3 - the 4 column resentment, the fear and the sex inventories
do them as they're shown in the Big Book
ask your sponsor lots of questions about how to do it, what goes where, how much (or little) to write, etc. Don't assume......ask your sponsor about everything along the way.
set time aside every AM and PM to write. even if it's just 15 minutes.
