what is the AA message??

Five—Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers

So what is that message?

Just don't drink?

The 12 steps are the way to recover from alcoholism?

AA is used to have a spiritual awakening that will remove the compulsion to drink. We then pass that on to the alcoholic who still suffers.

Did I win?

It is a spiritual message, yea it's the 12 steps... but those 12 steps definitely involve a spiritual awakening.... it is central to our recovery.

Anything else... well, it's just unmoderated/unsupervised group therapy.

On the inside jacket of the 3rd Edition of the Big Book it says:

"The first 164 pages of the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous is the AA message"

Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message...
So this message that I carry is that I have had a spiritual awakening as a result of working the steps.

And if that is the message that the program tells me to carry, then that applies to all of us in AA....so that makes it AA's message, which is, of course, explained in more detail in the first 164 pages of the book, as Boleo points out.

Big Book,
12 steps,
Spiritual awakening.
its so neat it baffles me as to why people have to complicate it with their own opinions,
everyone has opinions, but everyone also has an A-hole.

If you find that you are an alcoholic, you don't ever have to drink again. We will not promise you a pain free life, but you don't ever have to feel the pain that brought you to us ever again. We can show you a way of living that will make sense to you.

Freedom is the AA message. Whatever I am doing in AA should validate that one word.
