alien abduction
Someone body-snatched the critical, judgemental, and self-absorbed parents I grew up with and replaced them with compassionate, understanding, and, dare I say it, supportive human beings.
I don't know when this happened. I don't know who these people are.
I finally told them about Jack's addiction.
They did not freak out.
They did not condemn him or me.
They did not disown him or make me feel bad for staying with him.
They said they understood, they had been through it themselves, they were behind me 100%, and they would pray for Jack.
Well stick a fork in me b/c I am beyond done.
They had me in tears. I thanked them both for being so understanding. And when I got off the phone, I felt like the biggest weight had been lifted from me.
There's no maybe about it - I AM amazed.
I guess it was wrong of me to discount over 10 years of AA and al-anon meetings, just b/c I couldn't see that the 12 steps had been applied anywhere in either of their lives. My mom and I shared our similar struggles and my dad shared his knowledge and understanding of how baffling and cunning this disease is.
All along I had a major support system right under my nose and I never even knew it. I should have, but I was too busy isolating and enabling to see what was right in front of me.
I know what I'm thankful for this year - my parents. And wow, who woulda thunk it?

Sending in a hug. I'm glad things went well with your parents JG.
You took a chance in sharing with them, that took courage and things turned out just fine.

Journeygal; The same thing happened to my parents. Yup, they were abducted and then spit back out to earth in different characters. My dad quit drinking 7 years ago, and they are both wonderful and supportive now. I think part of it has to do with aging and seeing things differently too.
All we had to do was to click our heels together 3 times. There's no place like home. So nice to know.
