Hello. Recovering Alcoholic Drug Addict here. Nice to meet you all. New to exploring the programs of Al-Anon. We have no particular programs here in my city except A.A - N.A - and Al-Anon, Child of two badly addicted biological parents, How do we do this?
Welcome to our corner! Realizing that this might help you is great first step. Explore our stickies above to see how it relates. You can just replace the word "alcoholic" with "addicted parents" as you read. I guess for me the main thing to help move on is to emotionally detach, not with extreme hatred but with a need for healthy survival.
Hello blindsblinds, and welcome to our corner of recovery
As Kialua said, start by going thru the "sticky posts".
You mentioned that there is no ACA available in your location, in that case check out the meetings of al-anon in detail. They tend to specialize quite a bit, they have meetings focused for parents of addicts, others for young people - even teenagers, and there are al-anon meets that specialize in ACA issues. The best way to find out is to shop around and visit the meetings that are close to you.
Lacking real life meetings there are telephone and web meetings. You can find them here:
Adult Children of Alcoholics
In addition to 12 step programs a lot of peeps find that a therapist who specializes in ACA isssues can be a huge help. A good place to get a referal to a quality therapist is at .... meetings of al-anon
A joke that goes around al-anon is that half the peeps in a meeting have a therapist, and the other half _are_ a therapist
Big univerities with a department of psychology are also a good place to get counseling. They have the advantage of being cheap, you get a young person for a counselor who is up to date on the latest research, and who has access to wiser, older mentors that can give them direction when they get out of their depth.
While you are researching all of that you will come across a lot of terminology and concepts that are confusing. Please feel free to post any questions you may have on this forum. It is a very quiet, laid back forum and it may take a few days for all the "regulars" to stop by and reply. Silence does not mean that you are being ignored, it means the peeps are getting well and not spending a whole lot of time on SR.
