A Poem From Some Time Ago
Hello Friends,
I have been cleaning through All my papers (there are lots of them since 3rd grade when my mom left my dad), and I found this poem I wrote while in high school. It is obvious what the poem is about...my mom's alcoholism. It was a good reminder of a time when my mom had control while I was 18...but I NEVER have to go back to that ever again. Though she still is fighting her alcoholism (or giving in to the fight), I NEVER have to go back to that time again.
"It comes so quickly
The Plague.
It sneaks up on you like a fierce animal
hungering for the taste of sweet blood.
You never can see it until the plague
forms into the beast.
The beast waits patiently
to plunge into the depths of one's soul.
It will fight and twist with one's soul
while it taints the souls of loved ones.
Except
The person the plagued beast tortured first.
The plague quietly blinds them until they no longer
see the hurt or pain as it slowly morphes into a disease.
The sight is there-
The guilt is there-
But the plagued beast has developed such a sweet taste
for something other than human blood
that the guilt just drowns into stronger temptation for the alcohol.

That is an amazing poem.
Yes, it feels really good to reflect on how an addicted parent no longer controls our lives. I remember counting down to adulthood / freedom - and here I am.
