The Adult Child- out of the laundry and into the world...
This is another list!!!
A list of the attributes of the adult child- at the beginning.
But what happens at the end after years of letting go?
1. Adult children of alcoholics guess at what normal behavior is.
AC's have enough people around to do reality checks on a daily basis.
2. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty following a project through from beginning to end.
AC's learn to let go and get small things done. THen we can progress to bigger and bigger projects, with loving support.
3. Adult children of alcoholics lie when it would be just as easy to tell the truth.
AC's learn to speak from the self.
4. Adult children of alcoholics judge themselves without mercy.
AC's learn to judge others without mercy and then slowly, with self love, come home to their true identity.
5. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty having fun.
AC's fake fun and laughter, in safe settings [baby steps], until it becomes second nature.
6. Adult children of alcoholics take themselves very seriously.
AC's can do tremendous things when the chips are down. Over time they learn to recognise their strengths.
7. Adult children of alcoholics have difficulty with intimate relationships.
AC's learn to trust from amongst themselves. They can take this to the people closest to them, and then to the wider world.
8. Adult children of alcoholics overreact to changes over which they have no control.
Ac's hold onto the past like grim death. And always attempt to control the future. By letting go we attain poise and grace. No! I did not say 'poison grace'.:rotfxko
9. Adult children of alcoholics constantly seek approval and affirmation.
We learn to script and act our own scenes.
10. Adult children of alcoholics usually feel that they are different from other people.
By sharing our ESH we learn that we are special in the eyes of our peers. AC
11. Adult children of alcoholics are super responsible or super irresponsible.
AC's achieve a balance.
12. Adult children of alcoholics are extremely loyal, even in the face of evidence that the loyalty is undeserved.
We turn our loyalty gene to good use- to take care of ourselves and those who love and support us.
13. Adult children of alcoholics are impulsive. They tend to lock themselves into a course of action without giving serious consideration to alternative behaviors or possible consequences. This impulsively leads to confusion, self-loathing and loss of control over their environment. In addition, they spend an excessive amount of energy cleaning up the mess.
Adult Children have a huge energy for achievement. Given the opportunity, with our negative characteristics turned around, we are well placed to make a difference in the world.
