Anyone know when ACOA was renamed ACA?
Anyone know when ACOA was renamed ACA?
I was at an ACA meeting, and I said "ACOA" in a sentence and another member corrected me and said, "ACA, not ACOA". I don't know why, but I was kind of offended. I had always known the program to be called "ACOA". I know I'm sensitive, after all, I am an adult child of an alcoholic and have these sort of traits. But I would feel better knowing when they changed the name as I am returning to the program after being out of it for many years.

It was a regional thing. The name ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) is how it started out in the late 70's, early 80's. Sometime in the late 90's the East coast of the USA started putting in the extra "o", as in "ACoA". The rest of the world pretty much stayed with the original letters ( in the local language, naturally).
Then ACA as a national organization started to get more structured, they started working more closely with Al-anon, and the little "o" started getting used more and more across the whole country. For awhile there was a big dust-up about changing it to "Adult Children of Dysfunctinal Families". And another faction wanted "Adult Children of Toxic Environments". That faded away.
Nowadays there's not too many people that remember it without the "o".
