In-law Trouble
I hope that this forum can offer some assistance.
Here's my situation:
Mother and Father-in-law are both Alcoholics. My wife, 3 year old child, and myself live within walking distance from my in-laws. My brother-in-law, sister-in-law and their two children also live within walking distance from my wife’s parents.
For years we (wife and brother-in-law's family) have just accepted the facts that their parents drink and drink to get drunk. It has just been one of those things that have been swept under the carpet for years. And we just abide by the fact that we do not:
1. Talk to them after 5:00 PM
2. Let our kids go over there after 5:00 PM
3. Have faith that they will remember anything that we tell them
It recently came to a boil with them, one of us went over with one of our kids around 5:00 PM to assist with something and they were both trashed. Finally after some heated arguments my mother-in-law admitted that she needs help because she drinks to deal with the father-in-law.
I know her admitting that she needs help is the first step, but I think that she will not be able to succeed or even start.
My wife doesn't know what to do and how to deal with it, do we just sit back and offer support if they ask for it? Do we offer suggestions and push the matter? I see the pro's and con's for doing both.
Thank you for listening and any advice that you can offer.
Regards, webtangle
