Alcoholism is progressive as well. He may be a functioning alcoholic today, but that's just a stage of alcoholism.
I don't mean to sound negative, some people do enter recovery.
Trailmix, you're 100% correct. I have seen him progress from a healthy, happy young adult who was seldom drunk when we first married, to someone who is unhappy and needs a drink everyday. It's definitely a "family disease" because there is no way that his slow downward progression hasn't negativity affected myself and our son.
